Oil leak from prechamber
last weekend while running around 85 I noticed the oil pressure drop to 2.5bar and pulled over. Whole left side of engine was wet with oil and I was down 5 qts. Both oil cooler lines were replaced last month so I figured something came loose to cause it. Could not find a leak so refilled with oil and slowed down for the rest of the 250 mile trip. Never lost any more oil. After getting home and cleaning everthing up and running 85 up and down the highway I noticed a small amount of oil around a head bolt at the left front of the engine. Cleaned it up again today and just drove around town never pushing the car and it looks like the oil leak is seeping from the #1 prechamber. Any ideas? Cracked head, cracked prechamber? Car (83 300d) is running just like always, a top. Come on guys, can't be the first time this has happened to someone.

It is not the first time this has been mentioned.... if I remember correctly it is serious and can cause prechamber cracking or burn out if allowed to continue.... I never did have a mental picture of the route the oil took... but one of the possible causes seemed to have something to do with the vacuum pump (?)....Has to be in the Diesel Forum Archives somewhere.....

After cleaning the engine and keeping a close eye on it I finally determined the leak had to be coming from the injector pump. After running hard I could see a leak from around the ALDA connection. Took the car to the only authorized Bosh shop in the area and they fixed the leak. Whole new top was put on the pump. Cost me 300 bucks but I figure it was safe insurance. Last night I went for a late night high speed (85-95) for almost 100 miles and checked several times and no leak.
I think the oil soaking I got when whatever failed in the top of the pump was just still seeping from places that it never did before and throwing me off. Thanks for the help guys. |
