I am installing a new water pump on my '79 300 SD. The old gasket appears to have been attached to the water pump but not to the engine with brush on gasket sealant. I would like to know if I should use any sealant on the gasket or install it dry. If I use a sealant what kind should I use? My new bolts that came with the water pump appear to have sealant on them already, so I won't put any sealant on them.

I have done this job before and do not remember using any sealant. I am 90% sure it should go on dry, hopefully another member can confirm.

Thanks for the responses. I was a little confused when I noticed my old pump(which looked like it was the original pump), had the gasket glued to it. I am replacing the water pump because I am replacing the fan clutch. I got the water pump at the dealer for $20.00(40.00 core). It is an original water pump. I am sure that my old pump is still fine, but it is good insurance to switch it after all of this time. My fan clutch ($80.00)on the other hand was just about to fly off of the car! It spun freely, and I could wiggle it every which way! I have experienced that phenomenon before!

Patsy, where did you find a dealer to sell an OEM water pump for $20? Everywhere on the inetrnet, everyone wants about $50-$60. Not that I need one ,knocking on wood, but I am still curious.

Rick, a water pump from Fastlane is 28.00 (67.00 core), That is rebuilt of course. You must be pricing out new ones.

Water Pump
I get my water pumps from Mercedes parts places in the Atlanta, Ga. area. They are new pumps not rebuilt and no core charge. They come with a new gasket, and cost about $36. To be sure of no leaks, I apply a thin film of silicon sealer to both sides of the gasket. I don't want to have to re-do the job. I could probably get by without the sealer, but why take the chance of it leaking.

Patsy, A little Permatex spray copper or red goop won't hurt anything on the gasket. Just use a coathanger to hang the gasket on and spray a light coating of sealer on each side. Apply the gasket to the block before the sealer dries!
