This is just what I asked for. Great!!! Thanks... though, I've been reading it over and over again, and I get a little lost after the step where you roughen up the shaft with the screwdriver. I see the picture of the locktite after you roughen up the shaft, but where do you put the locktite on the shaft? Do you put it where you roughened it up? Or do you put it somewhere else on the shaft? AND, what size drill bit did you use?

After you reinstall all the numbers and the shaft back into the speedo, you take a toothpick with some locktite and put a drop on the shaft. This will wick up into the gear. I will try to take another pick of that and add it to the web site.

Thanks again, I'll be looking foward to that new picture. And don't forget, I need to know that drill bit size you used.

Hey,
Nice tutorial. Was that repair on your '84 300D?
I have a '84 300SD and that speedo doesn't look anything like mine. Mine isn't cable driven it's electric.
Anyway I just oredered the E1 gear from www.odometergears.com
I'll see if I can borrow a digital camera and take pictures.

Thanks. Great file for the welll...file....When I get to work on my car this Spring I hope to utilize some of the tips you offer. Seems like removing the cluster by pucking it from behind is so simple....I don't think I'd seen that mentioned elsewhere. Thanks again.

I like the additions to your site since last time I visited, thanks for the link.

I did not take my odometer apart as much as you did. The odometer can probably be fixed more easily than it looks in the pictures. I also did not use locktite on mine and wouldn't recommend using it.

Here is the link to the thread that helped me fix my odometer:
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=90607&highlight=odometer

Also, those vacuum switches on top of the valve cover only indirectly affect shifting on many cars. Their primary purpose is to operate the EGR. On many of these old cars the EGR has been disabled and the vacuum switches on top of the valve cover have been cut out of the circuit and do nothing at all. There is a sticky thread for vacuum diagrams at the top of this forum.

Dannym,

Your

sd series odometer is much different as you say. It is a much more complicated unit and the gears are much more prone to stripping.

Diesel Giant, I saw you updated the page and answered my questions. Thanks so very much again! One more thing though and I'll leave you alone , on this photo here, do you just pry the metal collar off with a flathead screwdriver? And how do you get it back on securely so it will stay?

Actually you can pry it off or just take some needle nose pliers and pull. To reinstall just take your needle nose pliers and slowly push back on. It is not on with great force to begin with.

Please make sure when you reinstall that you leave a little room so the shaft does not bind, ie some end play. With the collar on slam tight it will prevent the shaft from turning properly.

I will add this to the instructions.

I am glad you guys are ketching the little missing things here and there. Hope it helps someone.

Ok, I think I'm going to try this again. How do I remove the metal collar on the end of the odometer shaft? I had been trying to remove it with the needle nose pliers and it would not budge. DieselGiant, do you have a pic of how your used the pliers to grip and pull the collar off? I even tried a screwdriver, not enough space to place the head of the screwdriver under the collar to pry it. I might try it this weekend.

Hey,
My odometer broke again.
Turned out to be the other 2 gears that I didn't replace.
If anyone decides to do this repair. Do yourself a favor and replace all the gears not just one.

I wish there were seperate gears you could buy for the repair.
