There is an adjustment its on the cable at the drivers sider wheel well.
Adjust it just enough to take up the slack.

There is an adjustment at the hood latch on both my 107/115 models. It is difficult to get to. I think the nuts are about 10 mm. If you are going to work on the latch it might be a good time to install an external hood release. Check the sl site. I went into how to do it there. If your cable breaks you will be sorry you missed the chance.

On my '84 300SD the cable is clearly visible in the engine compartment. I don't see the '84 300D being any different.
This shouldn't be this difficult. You can trace the cable from the latches or if you pull the hood release while looking into the engine compartment you will see the cable move.
Mine is easily adjustable by hand.

i was in there today. took apart the handle by the driver's side kick panel- no adjustment there. traced all the way through the engine compartment - no adjuster along the cable.
seems the only adjustment point is underneath the latch. have to crack four philips head screws to get at it.. they were very tight ie. probably never touched in 21 years..

right now the handle (new) inside rides up onto the underdash cowling and finally at the very end of the cable travel will pop the hood, so it is annoying but not impossible to open.
thanks for the replies, will investigate further...

if i can ever get to that adjuster i will install an alternate release to bypass the cable. any suggestions on material to use for this?
wire/ coat hanger?
i would use this as the primary if i can't adjust the original cable.

To remove the 4 Philips screws first get a blunt nosed punch and a hammer. Put the punch in between the slots and hit it once on each quadrant. Do this on each screw and they will come out. I just took the latch out of a 1972 350 slc and the process worked like magic.

To adj. the cable lift up the latch and remove the pin that holds the cable clevis to the latch arm. Once the latch is removed you can back the cable out to the right side of the grill and work on it there.
