Buying a Gasoline Benz!

Well, its time for me to go to the darkside..

Being the dumb college kid I am, I see a blue, 1985 190E 2.3 parked in front of a local auto place. My father knows the guy who owns the place...I looked today on easter, so he wasnt around. Anyhow, the body is straight. There is no visible rust, and the interior is in pretty decent shape. The odometer says 76K, but I dont trust it. The sticker on the car says 999 or best offer. I am gonna offer 750, and if buy it. If he doesn't take it, we'll negotiate something less. Maybe its a ticking time bomb, but its cheap, the body isn't swiss cheese, and I can tinker with it throughout the summer, since its a nice, simple 4 cylinder. What do you guys think?
-Kyle

I owned an 85 190E 2.3 and I loved it. Friends who drove it liked it better than their own cars.

Mine was smoked silver with wine/red interior and was in immaculate condition. I just sold it recently. .....BB

wow that is a great price as is. of course i still think of an 85 as a newer car.

under a 100K on the OD and under a g note on the wallet. admittedly i know nothing about that car other than what it looks like and how many i see ont road still, but seems a deal.

good luck

Thumbs up MB Gassers

I got a real deal on my wagon. The car lot guy was asking 2300.00. Drove away the same day paying only 750.00. So far I am pleased with the 185 hp!!!

I'd also like to get a gasser 4 cyl MB for myself at some point if I could fine one cheap enough, I'd make it my car for winter time......gasser insurance is a lot more than on a diesel however, that'd be the only thing holding me back.....I'm going to keep my SD forever, so any car I got would be an extra one anyways.

The little MB's are fun little cars. I am no W201 expert but I can't think of any problem areas off the top of my head. Many people seem to rack up the miles on them. Also with a sportline kit and a wider set of wheels I bet one could be made to handle!

If it were me I'd have a mechanic give the it good look over. Might cost you a little
but would be well, well, worth it. My 190 is a great car, but that $750 car
could cost you $2500 in a few months.

Yep, that was the repair bill on mine when the timing chain snapped at just over 100,000 miles. Not that they're bad cars, just have it checked.
