Got yelled at for idling this morning

So, I pull into WaWa this morning to get my morning coffee, leave the diesel running. As I'm fixing my coffee.. some BIG SLOPPY FAT IDIOT walks in with filthy jeans and a big ORANGE shirt and starts asking people who's mercedes that is in a very hostile voice. I said "it's mine".. he says "well, it's idiling out there and I feel like reporting it" in a very hostile voice. I say "are you a cop?" in a very snotty voice and he says "I could be!".. I should have said you're too dammned fat.. but I said "why don't you write me a ticket then".. and he just storms out of the store in a big ol' huff.

He's probably going to report me to the state for idiling my car for over 2 minutes in front of a store. Why do some people just live to be idiots?

He could be, did he have a doughnut and coffee too. If so, you'd better watch out for the ticket in the mail.

Why ask Why? Try Bud Dry. Sorry, slogan stuck with me. There are a lot of holy crusaders out there. Even here. Look at the Anti-Suv crowd, Anti Cell Phone people to even start with. What makes me laugh is they consider other's excesses intolerable while their's are ok since they are slightly better. Like I once said, it reminds me of the cartoon in Playboy where they showed 2 shepards. One screwing a sheep and the other performing oral on his sheep. The first guy says "Oh, that is just sick!"

Perhaps he is working up to the "shut your engine off at the drive through" crusade? Or perhaps being equally snotty to emergency vehicles or the police.

Are there laws about letting the engine run idle in CA?

Only liberals are allowed to waste natural resources in NJ and Cali....

Actually many states have laws on the books pertaining to Commercial vehicles idleing.....

I wonder if Lardbutt ever lets his car warm up in the AM....I'll bet good money he does...

Some guy with a 123 diesel wagon gave me grief about my idling `84 300D at the diesel pumps at a Sunoco in Portsmouth, NH. I had just driven hard at 75-80 from N.J. and wanted to let the turbo cool down. He was such a ********* I figured that he did not deserve an explanation.

I've never had that happen yet...........I'd likely lash out with enough colorful language their ears would melt.

In madison, they were pondering an ordinance to make it against the law to idle more than 5 mins

Why would you even let your car idle outside while you're in a store? If you have a second key with you, you can lock the door, or maybe you have someone sitting in the car waiting who can lock the door but I bet in most of these cases, you were alone and probably left the door unlocked, you're making it REAL easy for some criminal to steal your car by letting it idle like that, even if you're gonna be gone for a second. If you've just driven it hard, and need to let the turbo cool, just sit in the car while it idles down, that's what I do.

I don't know about your car but 1 word for you. Afterglow. Every time I start my diesel up, it has a glow cycle and an afterglow. What does that do? Well it wears down the GP faster. So, if I am making a stop of a few minutes, I let it idle with the door locked since I can seperate the metal part from the electronic part. Also, this has to be in some place I feel safe and I can watch the car

Regarding leaving your engine running at the pump; it maybe just me but unless you took an exit ramp into the service station the turbo needs no cool down, it does it automatically as you drive at a slower speed. Diesel is not easily ignited but the vapors will ignite regardless. No one can be in that much of a hurry unless your a NASCAR driver, even those guys have a fire crew standing by when they're gassing with the engine running. It is illegal in most states to leave an engine running while fueling.
There, that's my rant for the day, it's raining here and I ain't happy.

Well, hope I don't get too slammed for this...
but I gotta wonder what his concern was.
It is environmentally unmindful to just let a vehicle run for no reason, gas or diesel.
If he was in a situation where the fumes were making him sick or he couldn't get away from the noise...
You did say, in a rather uncompassionate way, that he was in an unhealthy state.
Maybe he has a health problem which fumes exacerbates.

Conventional wisdom says that he should have just gone elsewhere, and he sure could have said it nicer, but some folks take it upon themselves to be an enforcer. If he really wanted to be a jerk, you would not have heard from him at all. You would have found yourself face to face with a cop.
I too have been annoyed in the past by thoughtless folks who pollute with no concern to people around them, usually it is people throwing garbage out their windows. I can't stand that. And as a motorcyclist, I got real reasons why that is more than just an inconvienence; it is a road hazard.

BTW, it is not legal where I live to idle long, or idle at all at a diesel pump.
There are valid reasons for this.
Seems to me that people need to be a little more understanding in this world, and in this case I think both parties failed....

is it any worse than waiting in the fast food drive-in or sitting in a traffic Q, apart from the fact that some scally could nick your car?

I could never get over people who left their cars running when they went into the wawa or whatever- granted, they were usually crap cars- but you'd never see that here, even out of the big cities.
