Nobody sells 47 cetane around here anymore

Now even the BP/Amoco stations have gone to 40 cetane. It might be my imagination, but I swear the car feels sluggish on 40 cetane. Is that in my head? Or was the 47 cetane really that much better?

The BP/Amoco stations in Leesburg and Purcellville used to have stickers on their pumps that said 47 cetane. They recently changed the stickers to 40 cetane, but I suspect that they have been selling 40 cetane for a while now.

If you can find a local homebrewer, buy 5 gallons of Biodiesel and add a gallon to each tank. It's cetane is 8-10 points HIGHER than pump diesel (normal Biodiesel cetane is around 55)

Or..., for you who can't find it and making your own processor is something out of the question, make a Dr.Pepper batch a few times a week.

Dr. Pepper bottle (with 1litre of waste oil/grease), 250ml "Heet" (yellow bottle), 6.0gms (or teaspoon) of Lye (Red Devil drain cleaner).

There are recipes online and there are some inhalation issues you need to be carefull with, but in general, it's safe, easy and fast. You can do it in an apartment. Makes a great fuel additive.

Stations around here used to post cetane numbers, I've not seen any stickers on diesel pumps anymore, even on some of the truck stop pumps I've frequented. Quality has gone downhill. Yet another reason to juice up on BIODIESEL.

\

The Liberty station on route 7 in Leesburgh carries B2 diesel.....It may be B20 but I think its B2........price was too low for B20 last time I was there....

Just a though but 2% biodiesel is better than 0% biodiesel....

In parts of Europe where vast numbers of high performance diesels are now being sold oil companies sell premium diesel fuels, some with a guaranteed minimum Cetane rating of 55.

There is no doubt that modern diesels run really well on these and shifting back to a lower quality fuel results in poorer performance, more noise & rattle at idle.

There are a number of Cetane improvers on the market and they work pretty well. And there are some of us who use premium diesel fuels and Cetane improvers

go to the bp website. i found a fella who sent me a list of places that sold their 50c in the chicago area and jobbers that sold it to independents. maybe he has such a list for you also.

the 50c is rare. all of the stations i called near me all sell 40. the closest 50 is more than one gallon away.

i've been using Stanadyne diesel fuel treatment, which is supposed to add a couple of cetane points. It does seem to make the car idle better.

That's because most of europe, if not all at this point, has a biodiesel mandate of 5% and parts of France and others are at B20. Easy to meet higher cetane ratings that way.

If you add 12 oz. of Power Service to 20 gal. of fuel, you will increase the Cetane from 40 to 46.

And you will feel the difference.
