optimal speed shifting in 300d
hi,
i have an 81 300d automatic. i was wondering at what speeds it should be shifting as i'm excellerating? is it only a 4 speed transmition? also, how easy is it to fix the dash board lights, the ones for the antilock brakes and battery, if they don't stay on after starting up? they're supposed to go off when i put the car into gear but now they jsut light up as i'm cranking it and turn off when the car is in idle. what the deal? thanks. |

If its performance is something like my erstwhile '81 Diesel Rabbit, you floor the throttle for all acceleration and govern the rate of acceleration by the shift point. In the Rabbit that usually meant that I shifted just short of the 5000 rev governor speed. With an auto just let it shift when it wants to.
IIRC the Rabbit was rated at 52 HP and got 40 MPG both urban and highway. It was actually a fun car to drive. You always drove it like you stole it, and I always went through corners as fast as possible so as not to loose the precious momentum that was so hard to get back. Duke |
