Rotella T syn vs. Mobil 1...........

Went to WalMart to buy the usual MOBIL ONE 15-50 wt. five quart jug for $19.88 but not available any longer. Instead, there was a 5 Qt. jug of M-1 labeled for diesels and gas engines 5-40 wt. for the same price.

Looking down the shelf I noticed MOBIL ONE 15-50 wt. was available but assume was renamed to SuperSyn, or something like that, and was $23.88 for 5 qts.

Hmmmmm, I thought and wondered about 5 weight as being lower than I would like having heard that wide spread oil weight such as 5-40 was not good!

Looked at another shelf and it had ROTELLA T synthetic featuring ADVANCED SOOT CONTROL, but also was 5-40.......but hay, the price was $13 and change but was a 4 quart jug, still cheaper than Mobil One, and I didn't have to buy 10 quarts (2 jugs) of M-1 spending over $40, but instead I bought 8 qts. of Rotella syn for $28 and change.

Question: Any reason why I shouldn't run ROTELLA T synthetic 5-40 instead of Mobil One's 5-40 diesel specific version of the same thing, or was I better off with the M-1 15-50???????????? .........BB :computer:

BB, I've been looking at the same two oils for quite awhile. I've always used Rotella-T syn and have always eyed Mobil1. There is no question that Mobil 1 is the "better" oil.

However, I change the oil on them every 5K because I don't want to accumulate more than 1% soot. My feelings are that soot is abrasive and I don't feel comfortable pushing the numbers up toward 2%. So, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to purchase the Mobil1 if I only go 5K. Now, I'm tempted to push the OCI up to 7.5K with Mobil 1, but, only if I can get it for $4.00 per quart. If I have to pay $4.78 per quart, I'll just stay with the Rotella-T at $3.25 per quart.

I'm also disinclined to go to the Mobil-1 because I consume 10 quarts in 5K OCI (burns/leaks 2 quarts).

The oil analysis of my 603 had been quite good for wear metals over the last 10K and two oil changes.

I am pretty sure Rottela-T isn't a true synthetic like Mobil 1 is.

Mobil 1 just changed their bottles 15w-50 is still the same stuff. And now Delvac 1 comes in the cheaper 5 quart jugs.

BTW 5w-40 Truck & SUV oil aka Mobil Delvac 1 is probably the best diesel oil on the market.

I also use Rotella Syn and I have had no problems summer or winter. I also change at 5K miles. Only if I had a separate by-pass filter would I consider Mobil 1 and extended oil changes.

Some people say that M1 isn't a true synthetic either since the lawsuits. I say they are splitting hairs off a dead horse.

With good maintenance you can make your engine outlast the rest of the car with either one of these oils. There of course will be a few exceptions. This would probably also be true of many other oils on the market.

Now note that there are bigillions of posts in existing oil threads on this forum and oil threads have a history of going off topic or digressing into opinionated speculations. If that isn't enough to wear you out check bobistheoilman.com.

One little bit of info I got from the hundreds of oil threads is Mobil 1 is a group 4/5 synthetic along with Amsoil. While the other oils are group 3's.

Thank you guys!

I wasn't trying to start another oil thread and hope this one dosn't go off-track. Just noting Mobil's new line of M-1, and if any objections to Rotella's version of M-1.

Yes, I too change at 5K, and add two cups between.

5-40 weight is of no concern I take it, as opposed to say 15-50? ....BB :rolleyes2

Mobil1 0w40 or 5w40 -best Oil.
If you are looking for low cost Oil -sure used and after replace Engine.
I Use on my Diesel Esso 0w40 perfect. 650 000 mil - original Engine.

Regards.

Not another oil thread!! What difference does a group 3 or 4 or 5 oil make? These cars will go 300K, 400K, etc. on regular oil. If you want to spend the money on a group 5 oil then go ahead but you might as well set the extra money on fire because you aren't really benefiting anything. If you plan on extending oil drain intervals that may be a reason to try a group 5 however these old diesels put enough soot into the oil that extended drains aren't the best idea anyway. Group 3 oils like Rotella and Chevron synthetic work great for winter starting and won't kill your budget. RT

Some people actually like it and get turned on by that. However that is another thread.

I use M1 on All my cars for a reason. My vette gets beat on a lot so the extra protection helps. My old 89 Merkur XR4Ti and my 99 E300 both have oil in the turbo which can get coked. My Merkur would glow red hot after a run. both the manifold and turbo so I believe it would help especially when I don't have a turbo timer.

Mobil1 Truck & SUV is Delvac 1 and is the highest rated oil I know of. CI-4

Thank you! My SDL had God-know-what for its first 230k miles, I've put 26k on it since then. It's going to rust apart before oil becomes an issue! :D

Best Regards,
Jim

The new Shell Rotella-T is also CI-4 rated.... :)

I am confused. It Delvac 1 synthetic? I stood in the store staring at it yesterday cause the price was good for the jugs, but realized that it was not. Was I wrong?

Dana B. 04-17-2005 02:27 PM

Delvac 1 is synthetic; Delvac 1300 is not. Both are diesel-rated oils. While the silver-jugged Delvac is RARELY sold in stores, the dino Delvac is quite common. The Mobil 1 Truck & SUV 5w-40 is the right stuff and is commonly available.
