brake fluid reservoir

what are the two little black "pumps" for on the brake fluid reservoir on an 1982 300D?

I believe you press on them to test the low fluid circuit. Or in my case, they are there to gush out brake fluid if I try and use a power bleeder.

I wondered what those things were too. When I used the power bleeder on my SDL they leaked fluid out pretty badly. I figured one of these days I should figure out what they were.

well brake fluid is leaking around the front brake caliper. I had to put more fluid in the other day and the brakes have gotten a bit mushy. maybe theres air in there or something. anyway im replacing both of them this weekend so hopefully that and the resulting bleeding will resolve it. I just wanted to know if there was a quick fix to tighten them up temporarily.

those 'pumps' are the brake fluid level sensors. Yours are cracked if they're leaking, just replace the black caps, but check first as there are two kinds, one with a center stem and one without.
