Valve Adjusting Wrenches confusion

I see two 2769 and one 2769-3 are needed for adjusting values. But then I see one 2769, one 2769-1, and one 2769-3 are needed on other sites.

The handle on the 2769-1 appears shorter than on the 2769.

Can someone clear up the confusion around the 2769-1 for me?

JJ

Answer:

Both are correct.
The wrench set depends upon which engine you have.
The variation is size combination.

On the 617 wrenches the lower one has to be pretty thin.... and if you take Sears wrenches and bend them to where they will " spoon "... the handles will end up different lengths at the top.
Some people, like PEH, always jump in and say the lower wrench is not needed... it is only needed if your locking nut is tight.... I only needed the lower on three valves.. but on those I REALLY needed it... and if you are doing your adjustment on a weekend or evening you have the possibility of not being able to finish your adjustment until you find one of the lower wrenches...
If you look at the pictures in the Haynes manual you will notice that when they show using an adjustable wrench to hold that valve keeper they say " Cam removed for clarity" ... you have to watch for those kinds of tricks when planning ahead for a new experience.

The only difference in the 2679 and 2679-1 is the length of the handle. Any combination of the two will work. However, my preference is for one of each. That way your hands are offset a bit. There may be some vehicles where there is not enough room to use the longer handle wrench. I have seen the 2679-1 (short version) sold in pairs for use in the Unimog.
