plastic cover behind door panel...important or not?

recently my dad and i did some work on the window regualator, and we had to tear off the plastic sheet that was glued to the door, in order to get to it. how important is it to replace that?

This sheet is there to prevent drafts from entering the car. Is that important? You decide.

Besides drafts and soundproofing to an extent, It also protects the removeable door panel(hidden side facing outward) from Moisture. The door panel, without this, will start to distort itself from moisture over time. Replace it-one can be cut freom plastic sheeting easily and cheap enough.

Any suggestions for what to do if the adhesive on the door no longer has enough "tack" to hold on to the plastic sheet?

liquid nails ought to work - or anything else that's sticky and won't get brittle over time.

I believe the 3M adhesives were being discussed elsewhere on the forum...these work exceptionally.
I used some yellow death (not sure of its real name...used for gaskets) to attach 5mil plastic on the doors on my bug behind the panels. I recommend doing this as well.

Those panels are available from Mercedes and I believe they are under 5 bucks a piece.

I used several of those small 3M clear sticky squares sold in office depot or office max. Silicone would work OK also-that way if you want to remove the sheeting in the future it removes easily.

Doesn't silicone induce rust?
