Wow does adjusting valves make a huge difference!
I finally got around to adjusting the valves on the 84 300 D. I have put over 10k miles on her myself. I have every service record and dont see a valve adjustment entry. Well the car has always been fast but did not idle worth a puke when cold. Never much smoke and always started.
When I did the valves they were tighter than a old Banker. After adjusting, the car started right up and idled so smooth I almost fainted. It was Cadillac smooth. WOW  I never knew the old 5 cylinder could do it. It is nice not to stop at a light and feel like you are in a paint mixer. So get out there and adjust those valves. |
They definitely make a huge difference, I experienced the same thing myself last year. This year I intend to do it myself for the first time. Hopefully I'll get the time to do so within a month, if not then I'll just have to pay the mechanic to do it.

I need to do mine! :D And the Valves... :o |
I concur completely...The big thing I noticed that after the adjustment the car started up perfectly whereas before I had to crank and crank (bad glow plug) before it would run....

Just a note for everyone that may not know when you are adjusting the valves you usualy are making them looser. As Mr. giant refered to "tighter than a old Banker" meaning they were tight b4 adjusting. A loose valve is a happy valve.

I've been meaning to get this done myself...did you use the special wrenches? Is there a procedure poste somewhere?
Thanks. |
pdxman, directions for performing the valve adjustments are all over this forum. Just do a search.

No man, I haven't killed my EGR yet. I'm sure you figured that I wouldn't have done it by now. I'm in the middle of that expansion I told you about. I should see myself having much more time in after May. |
pdxman...
do you work at PDX or just live in Portland???
|
Live about 30 miles outside of Portland and commute into the city to work. Not at the airport (PDX) tho.
