Parking brake shoe/rear rotor install problem-Help?

Wolfwalker and I got the new pkng shoes and rotor and new pads on the rear passenger side - no problems.

The drivers side rear rotor came off hard. I bet it was the original at 258k miles. New pkng. shoes were put on, but new ATE rotor would not fit. We tried everything known to man. Even if we had gotten it on, it would have been locked up. We had the adjustment screw backed off all the way. Nothing worked.

Any ideas?
We took the shoes back off and I am driving right now without pkng brake shoes on that side.

Check the cable on that side. Make sure the mechanism is released all the way. Try the same rotor on the other side of the car.

Is it possible that the brake shoes were not properly seated on the expander?

shoes were seated

I know those shoes were seated. The cable was released as much as we could get to to release. It was released at the dash and the bolt that holds the cable to the wheel was out. When wolfwalker was under car and pulled on cable for that wheel it looked like shoes released more, but there was no way to loosen the cable or back off the expander any more.

The expander was seated properly and was rotated to let the shoes off as far as it would turn.

I have gone back again and looked at the factory service manual. It said to back off the adjuster underneath the car all the way. We did that. We also backed off the adjustment on the shoes. No matter what we did, the rotor would not budge over those shoes.

I can see nothing in the manual we did incorectly. I doubt the ATE rotor was bad or that the original Mercedes shoes from dealer were bad or out of spec. We were both stumped. Maybe this was why I had so much rear wheel noise!

I am unclear as to whether the brake cable had been relieved of tension by loosening the adjustment screw underneath the car. If not, I would try that. Also, to make sure that we are talking about the same thing, the expander is at the bottom, the adjustor is at the top of the shoes. You might also see if one of the old rotors will go on. If not, you know something is not right with the way the shoes fit.

The cable was loose, as in loose and floppy, shoes re-seated a couple times, I don't get it. In my defense I want to say it was getting cold, windy, and we were both late to getting to our respective significant others..

I'd still like another shot at it.. On a concrete floor this time..

It stumped me

It was definitely not wolf walker's fault - the cable was loose - and yes, my wife gave me a butt chewing for getting home so late.

Fac Serv. Manual say the adjustment wheel does have to point forward towards front end of car. We did that. It also says tension on bolt underneath car should be let off all the way to adjust pkng brakes properly. We did that.

That cable does go through a rubber cover. It might be binding up inside that cover is all I can think.
