My block heater is dead. It has no contiuity with an ohm meter. Is it a big repair to replace it? It is very cold today. Do I have to drain the water & drop the starter?

Block Heater

Are you sure the electric plug is connected to the block heater? On the 1980 300SD you will not have to remove the starter to replace the heater.Good luck.
