parts interchangeable??

Hello, we just recently bought an 81 300d. After buying it and driving it to ohio from florida, we realised it needs a new rear end. We have located an 81 240d, will the parts work? Both are 123 models so I think they will, but I want to be sure before I go to all the work of pulling off the parts. Thanks, you guys are the best source of info for our new treasure we have found.

use the search for some good tips on measuring the rear end ratios by jacking one rear wheel, turning it and counting the revs.

The ratio is usually stamped onto the bottom right rear of the diff. case. 123s were usually 3.xx I believe. You really want to get teh same ratio. Otherwise you wind up with a whole other bunch of things to deal with.

The 240D differential will fit, but the ratio is not the same as the 300D. If I just read the parts catalog correctly, the 300D diff is 1 : 3.46 and the 240D is 1 : 3.69. As stated above, the ratios are stamped on the case.
