Aluminum air cleaner needed....

CHEAP!
My poor smoking wagon has been at the mechanic almost a week now, and it isn't looking good. One of the MANY things the guy has found is that my aircleaner (that I wasted my time polishing) has totally come apart! I never knew it was broken since I had never seen it any other way. Apparantly the middle part that connects to the manifold piece has seperated, and I'm sucking air into the motor from underneath, and not through the snorkle and filter.
I guess I don't need the top piece, but either way that's fine. It has the vent from the valve cover, and a fitting on the bottom that goes into a tube. I'm sure anybody with an extra would know what I'm referring to.
It is for an '80 300TD, which of course is non turbo. The one from my parts car ('77 300D) is the wrong kind.
Thanks for anyones consideration.....
Jimmy

I can't tell how it is broken... but if you bring it down this weekend I will fix it.

When the air cleaner is removed, that part in the middle stays on the manifold opening. There is supposed to be a rubber seal in between that orifice and the air cleaner which has disintegrated, but I don't know if that rubber piece holds everything together or not.
William, you have an '80 wagon with a nicely polished air cleaner, how does yours stay together?
So Greg, you keep inviting folks down this weekend; does your welding area still need cleaning or what.....

I dont know off hand how it stays together, but it does without a problem. Here's some quick at night photo's- ours are different. Well I tried, but the computer dont like me right now. My air cleaner has a vaccuum line running across the top, and the valve cover breather goes underneath- I dont have a vapor seperator inside the air cleaner. okay now she likes me

I have not looked at mine in a while. I'll try and take a quick peek tomorrow morning and let you know what I find.

Thanks William for snapping those pics this evening. Yours looks more like my parts car, a '77 300D, except it is steel.

Thank you too Bill. I'm curious to see what yours looks like. There are so many things on this '80 wagon that never look like any other cars items.
By the way, I removed my fuel sender last summer and it was dented. I just assumed someone had it out and dropped it. (re: your other thread)

Does anyone have an air cleaner setup like the one in my pic? I'm curious how it is supposed to fit together.

That is what I asked my mechanic, as there is still a little shredded piece of that left, and he said "trust me, your aircleaner is broke". My question, which I did not ask him, is that I know he knows these cars well. Very well in fact. But maybe he isn't familiar with this seemingly obscure air cleaner? That is why I asked if anyone has one like it and can look at theirs.
I appreciate the research, by the way. Stuff like this always makes me curious also. I need a life I guess...

Well, Yes, my implement welding area , after hail three weeks in a row , does need 500 lbs of oak leaves raked up ....
However, with what you describe, and it being aluminum , I was going to convert you to believing in Rivets.... aluminum rivets, aluminum sheet... goes well together. In emergency we break out the argon bottle and TIG it... but that is indoors...

Call me before you TIG that thin-assed piece of beercan. It will be interesting to watch the dissapearing act take place.

Jimmy,
One of these days, I'll get my EPC (electronic parts catalog) running so that we can all have a look-see how these parts fit together but, in the meantime, see if you can get someone at a MBZ dealership or at Fastlane to shoot you a copy of the exploded parts view of that particular aircleaner assembly out of the EPC. It could very well be that your mechanic doesn't really know how it is supposed fit together and is "blowing smoke".

Good luck!!

I'm still in need of an aircleaner like the pic in the first post. The top has an inlet for the line from valve cover, and the bottom has a nipple for an oil drain tube. It is not just the rubber seal, it is actually broken per my mechanic who has seen this before.
Anyone have an extra, or even have one just like it that could snap a pic?
