Crap! A female drove my car. Please help me!
Ok, heres the deal. My mom took a long trip to Michigan and back, from KY. Before she left, my car started perfectly, and ran smoothly. Now, when i start the engine, it shakes miserabely. Also when i turn it makes loud squeaky noises. Loose Frame? Old, rusted engine? I dont know what to search for, so please give me some hints. You all are pretty frigin awesome!

Engine Shaking: Motor Mounts, Engine Shocks, Rack Damper Adjustment?
Steering Sqeaks: Tie Rod Ends, PS Pump Problem? Steering Box? rubber boots failed/missing on steering components? The squeaking could also be the PS Pump Drive Belt squeaking when pressure is put on it (when turning), sounds likely if its old and wearing out.... I'd neeever let a female drive my car *ducks*

Hey now, I think there are some ladies (two of us?) on this board who could take offense at this.
I will say though, that in my car's 209k miles, all of its major traumas have been when a woman in the family takes the wheel. Mom's record: hit a deer, was slammed into in the rear backing out of a parking space, let it roll down a hill with me and my sister in it (no one, car or human, was hurt) and my personal favorite, in 1988 backed into it in our driveway with her 87 GMC 'Burban. My older sister hydroplaned it into a curb next to a prison. HOWEVER, I am of the female persuasion, and have taken very good care of the car ... as much as my very amatuer mechanical knowledge can muster.

If it isn't running good you might go italian tune it up a bit...maybe she didn't romp on it properly while taking it on the road trip. Carbon in my engine is short lived
The only people other people that have driven my car apart from my father and I are females. However, the deal is, they know precisely how much my diesel means to me and they best not hurt it I got a compliment the other day from a female friend of mine who followed me up to school that the back end of my w126 looks very sexy/hot. I think I'll have to agree.... |

Engine shaking could also be an injector problem...either bad timing or sooted up. Some diesel purge may smoothe things out a little (if you haven't heard of it, go to www.**************.com or run a search). Usually motor mounts and shocks go bad slowly, not on a single trip...
As far as the steering you could try the control arm bushings, replacement is relatively inexpensive if the rubber is bad, check power steering fluid and pump for operation, and if you haven't already and can't find any records of it, change your power steering pump filter. Surprisingly there is a round filter in the bottom of your pump and this could be gummed up. Simply drain your fluid out with a baster, remove the spring retaining the filter and then the filter, install new one, remove return line, run the engine pouring in new fluid until the stuff coming out the return line comes clean, close it up and refill to the correct level. This can't hurt anyways. She may also have gotten a poor batch of fuel, so run the tank out and refill, possibly with a good fuel additive, and see if things improve. Plugged fuel filters both in the engine compartment and the one inside your tank may be causing the hard starts, or shot glow plugs. Hope this helps.

Suggest new fuel filters + full quart of diesel911 + a gallon of canola oil + a shot of biobore. New engine mounts can not hurt and are cheap. New belts are a good idea, replace your radiator hoses at the same time, if they are hard. A valve cover gasket and valve adjustment would not be a bad idea, if this is the first long trip since you have owned the car, may have knocked the carbon off valves and seats = cleaned it out during the trip.

It may have been filled from the gasoline bowser rather than the diesel one!!!! Easy fix, dump in a gallon or 5 of cooking oil or engine oil and drive the petrol out of it.

erf,
I was thinking along the lines of Tony that gasoline may have been put in instead of Diesel fuel. The only other things I can think of that anyone could do to make the engine run poorly would be to run it low on oil or over rev the engine. But over reving a Diesel is unlikely. As far as the suspension problem, that could have been done by hitting a curb or pothole. This an incompetent driver could do. P E H Last edited by P.E.Haiges; 04-15-2005 at 10:43 AM. |

my mom over revved it
When my mom took me to shcool one day, shehe always pushs the pedal to the floor. She doesnt know any better, and if i tell her she will kick my ass. All she does is push the pedal as far down as she can. So what do you all suggest for an overused engine?

I always push my pedal to the floor when accelerating This is a normal action for a diesel. Doing this with a gasser results in great fuel consumption and tire....sounds..... (caravan)

i understand that the title of this thread was meant to be lighthearted and humorous, but frankly, i still find it to be somewhat offensive. a slight alteration like "crap! my mom drove my car..." or "crap! my not-so-car-savvy mom drove my car..." could easily remedy this issue.
no hard feelings... |
