W124 602 fuel leak - help please

I shut off the car in my garage this afternoon and 15 minutes later I had a good-sized puddle of fuel under the car. It is dripping from a small aluminum canister that is bolted to the block just below the plastic prefilter. I don't know what this canister is... maybe the fuel pump? It's smaller than any fuel pump I've seen before. I have searched the forum but was not able to find a definitive answer. It has four hoses going to it - one from a device on the side of the IP (fuel heater?) via a hard plastic tube, one from the plastic pre-filter, and two that go to the firewall area.

The hose exiting the front of the canister to the plastic prefilter is where the leak is. The front of the canister looks like a plastic piece that is held in by a circlip. This plastic piece will swivel a bit, which always bothered me. Bad O-ring? If so, is it easy to replace, and where is the best place to get a new one? I would like to get one locally tomorrow (Dallas area) if possible. My wife does not like the strong diesel odor (nor do I).

The car in question is a '91 300D, in case you couldn't guess.

Thanks in advance,

-Dave

Talking Mystery cannister

I've a '90 124128 with the"602"

That would (I believe) be your "Fuel Warmer".The two hoses that leave and
disappear around the back side of the oil filter housing should connect with
the engine cooling circuit; when the engine reaches operating temp heating
the fuel.

The plastic you see may be your problem. You can run the feed
line directly to the mechanical lift pump on the side of the injection pump.
It is oriented perpendicularly to the engine Driveshaft and has two hoses.
If you do decide to try this as a "temporary" fix ,remember to place a
primary (Little Plastic) fuel filter in between the tank (metal) supply line
and your lift pump. The second hose leaves the lift pump and connects directly
with the secondary (spin on) fuel filter.

Thanks for the reply - I successfully bypassed the fuel warmer yesterday as you described. The small plastic filter is still inline. I didn't see any related parts on fastlane so I guess I will call the dealer tomorrow and see if they can help me out (with, I assume, a new O-ring).

Update - I called the dealer on Monday morning and ordered a new O-ring. It was in by Tuesday afternoon and I picked it up on the way home. Price: $1.95. Can't complain about that! It was labeled as an Injector Pump O-ring so I asked the parts guy and he said they were used in multiple places, but we verified on the diagram that it was the correct part.

I was very impressed with the dealership (Ewing ********) - one of only two in the entire Dallas area. Seemed well organized, friendly, knowledgable and without the snob-factor I've experienced at certain BMW dealerships.

Hopefully I will have time to install the O-ring in the next day or two.

Finished it - the job was straightforward as long as one doesn't drop any parts. The old seal was quite hard and flattened out - no wonder it was leaking. Took about an hour (took my time and cleaned everything well while I was at it) plus five minutes of handwashing. Total cost: $1.95.
