can you top this true story?

dont know if any one saw jwilson's 1987 300 wagon that sold on ebay but here is the blow by blow on the trip from boston to louisville ky.
picked the car up and sorta felt the problem was mostly fuel related, car took forever to get the top speed of 65 on level ground, drove from hanson mass to ponton lake nj mostly with the emergency flashers on because most of the small grades would pull the car down to 40-45 mph.
my friend in nj had an old pressure regulator from a torch so we rigged a line off the intake manifold and sure enough it had about 2 pounds of boost at 3500 revs.
we took inventory of his garage and located a bicycle tire pump, some assortment of tubing,a piece of bamboo that we cut into sections to fit the hoses together and located the tire pump inside the car.
so now with the port plugged at the intake manifold and the tire pump pressure directed to the alda input we tested her out,two strokes on the air pump and hold it constant the thing would develop enough power to climb to 85 in a jiff.figured the nj police would understand at 85 but didnt want to press my luck.lol
ok so here is the challenge, after about 750 miles of pumping that darn pump up those hills in maryland, west va,i am ready to arm wrestle any one.
also if anyone would like to have an emergency kit of this sort i can supply. this sorta kit is priceless though if you build it your self.

ps,tell me if you know of an easier way to drive this 603 without turbo boost

turbo, tell me about it, was about half way up negro mt with heavy pressure on the air pump, popped one of my hoses off and drifted down to 20 mph,got her to the emergency lane to dodge the 18 wheelers.
met a couple from canada doing some site seeing who donated a hand full of wire ties to secure my bamboo hose adaptors and was on the trail again.
felt good to make this now an international effort.

Answer:

Sounds like plugged manifold port and/or waste gate needs adjustment.
Both are simple DIY.
Unless you really enjoy pumping.

Check the overboost switch also

Larry,

The vacuum signal also goes through an overboost protection switch ( on the drivers fender on the larger cars), then to the Alda. You can bypass this to test and see if it is the problem.

why not just fix the problem???

You've determioned what the cause is, why not go a little further and fix the problem???

My guess is that a blocked and/or leaking boost hose.

very simply fix.

turbo trouble shooting

thanks for all the suggestions, will report the fix when its done.
can tell you that joe wilson had his mechanic working to solve for some time, the estimates of bad compression on two cylinders, needs a valve job all seems to be wrong.
the alda safety relay had already been bypassed, the boost hose was new and my first move was to run a drill bit thru the intake port and pray it would be closed, but it was open. i did rig up a direct vac line to the waste gate control but had no way to see the value of vac i had subsituted so that test may have not been a good one.actually i need to research the vac control to the waste gate as i dont know what happens there. i need help there if some one knows how it works.

did make it through Hugo

Whunter,

Short hi-jack here... I've been in Charlotte since '84 then to Mooresville / Lake Norman since 85 ( about 30 miles North). Hugo was wild. We lost about 10 large trees on our lot. A marina nearby had a boat slip with a roof on it and 10 boats underneath. It flipped the whole thing over - boats included. Parts of docks were all over the lake. When the eye came by early in the morning I looked out and a friend's brand new pontoon was floating by. I
put on some safety glasses because of all the stuff still flying around and managed to secure it between some docks and trees. Winds were sustained at 75 + mph and gusts over 100. By mid morning all was pretty, warm, and clear.

Everything was wall-papered with leaves. No power ( and no well water) for about 7 days after. Charlotte was a mess.

I can imagine the truck maintenance going on. The power company guys were working non-stop for a couple of weeks. Over 300,000 people out of power just in Charlotte alone.

A couple years later I also helped a friend after Fran near Raleigh. Also a huge mess. A LOT of chainsaw time involved.

Memory lane.

Short hi-jack continued.
Hello Chuck
We where in Rock Hill, SC.
I was driving in the worst of it.
Never forget seeing overhead highway signs flying around like cardboard.
I heard that Fran was nasty.
Not many Hurricanes fail to make a mess.
Have a great day.

Larry - You ought to be able to put a sizeable air tank in the back seat and get a small regulator for it. Don't pay any attention to those guys who would fix it right. Necessity is the mother of invention, right?

Actually, congratulations on being able to troubleshoot and improvise to keep it on the road home. I don't think you're going to have any trouble getting that thing running right!

Wes

options

wes, joe had 4 tires on rims that was inflated and believe it or not i had a good regulator from a torch set but couldnt figure out a system to release the air pressure from the alda with the parts i had to work with. after all was said and done i now see that i could have used the tires as air pressure, crimped the hose to relieve the alda pressure and released the fuel feed pedal and any remaining air pressure would have been discharged.
of course my right arm would be about 1 inch less in diameter and mama likes to touch you know, lol
