I just bought this differential of ebay \ is it going to fit?
 

This differential is for an 85 300SD my car is a 1984 300D

The guy said it would work but i wanted to get some solid advice too.

I was under the impression that the 126's diff wouldn't fit as it was physically larger than the 123s. :confused:

You decided to buy it; then find out it it would work? Is that what you're saying?

I know the W116 differential won't directly fit...there is another thread about this in the last 3 days....the W126 I would assume is a simular situation.

Did you ask what happens if it won't fit?
What is shipping going to cost?

I bought the item because he said it would. Now that i know this is untrue I guess i will have to see what he says about that.

the 116 diff I just put in my 300td was a bit larger (taller) but it did not effect the fit. I thought in the one of the easter egg threads someone mentioned swapping between 123 and 126 diff's.....

Ya, don't give up the ghost yet. I have not heard anyone definitivley say that it won't fit. Find out for sure b4 you let it bother you. Might just go right in...Could be an easy mod.-too early to get concerned imho.
One of the experienced mechs here might pipe in b4 tomorrow, I would also call a few shops and ask folks who have done this sort of thing several times. And I love second and third opinions as well.

And if you find out for certain that it can't work, the buyer might be real cool about it. Think positive, this is the way we all learn.

I could have sworn I read the ring gear was like 210mm vs like 175mm ... so that could explain the taller cases...

I don't think you will have a problem. I went thru an experience when I bought what I thought was a 123 differential and had a shop swap it into my '79 300TD. It went in OK but we had a problem with the camber on the rear wheels and then the half shaft had some slop where it fits the differential. Then it was determined that it was a 300SD differential.
There are 2 precision ground spacer washers that fit between the half axles and the differential housing. Mine were the wrong thickness. I had to order a kit from MB that has several sizes and that turned out to be a long delay as they had to call someone in the shop at the local dealer and then after a lot of searching they foiund the kit number then they ordered it from Germany. It solved the problem, but I read somewhere on the SHopforum that these kits are obsolete and unavailable any longer.
FWIW, I am running a '79 200 TD with an '85 300dt engine and a W116 300 SD driveshaft modified yoke and a ?? 300SD differential. Lots of things can be done between series if you have a little know how and the drive to make things work.

What I mean is it may be slightly wider, taller is not a problem. I bought a pumpkin from that outfit in Sun Valley, its still sitting in the garage for a future swap/project. I remember it cost me $150 back in 2000. I was able to drive down to get it and saw their wrecking yard, a real busy place and quite a few MB's scattered around in it.
$75 is a real steal. You should be able to make it work if not sell it to someone for more to cover your costs then some.

Ok , let me see if I understand you correctly. The differential will bolt up and the axle shafts will connect, but my alignment is going to be messed up unless I get a spacer kit. Do you have a part number?

Damn foiled again.

I tried to trick my dealer into giving me the part number so I could get it some place cheaper (most of the time my dealer charges twice list price)

They do still sell them and they go for 36 bucks a side.

Still a good price for the $75.00 differential.
