What do you mean by preheating? If you mean no glowplugs, that would be a new one to me. If you mean not plugging in when it is cold, most new diesels are not as finnicky about being plugged in when it isn't terribly cold.

Thumbs up Direct Injection

Glow plugs still exist in the VW TDI engines. However, the time is very fast to heat. Not really necessary unless it is below 20 deg F. So, you can just crank and go.

glowplugs still there

It is just a 1-2 second wait now even when really cold. But the glow light still comes on so pre heat is still needed.

The new CDI's are pretty much turn the key and go. The glow plugs work very fast and the computer compinsates for a lot.

It sounds like the w210 glow plugs are challenging but changeable for the home mechanic. I bet the CDI is next to impossible and certainly would void your warranty. I wonder if glow plug failure is covered under the warranty. Glow plugs are strictly for easy starting(also a little easier on the engine). Commonsense and it sounds like experience says that the faster working the glow plug the shorter the life. We pay for our impatience.

Challanging? What are you joking? If the plugs are not stuck in it is an extremly simple and fast job. I have never worked on a CDI but knowing MB they are mostly likely simple to get at.

Well, I looked at an E320 CDI at the auto show last week. The first thing you see when you open the hood is the huge plastic engine cover that takes up almost the entire engine bay. Through it poke two things - an oil level dipstick, and oil fill cap. While I couldn't make a study of how it comes apart, I didn't immediately see any easy way of getting that cover off. It all reeks of "user keep out!"

Lower as I know... boost pressures are a lot higher. The GM Duramax is 17.5:1 only.

Impossible if it gets stuck. You might need a machine shop at that point. That is why I am doing mine every year prophylactically. To prevent what happened last Dec. It would cost me some anti-sieze and an intake manifold gasket and maybe every other year the big O ring that seals the EGR to the manifold.

I think the problem is the afterglow. You start the car by glowing the plugs and it keeps glowing for a while AFTER the engine is running.
