Need to hang a door on my SDL

My RR door has a good sized dent going down vertically. It is about 12" long and 4" wide at the widest part. I had a dent guy look at it today who comes to the car dealer I work at and he said that he could get most of the dent out but it still wouldn't be completely right. So, I had him hold off as he said to go to a bodyshop and have them pull it then they'll bondo the rest. I don't want bondo on this car so I was hoping to get a door from a local junkyard.

Of course it seems as if it would be pretty easy but I'm fearful about the alignment part of the job. Are these the kind of doors that I can just bolt on and they'll line up and not have to be slammed, etc. to get them closed?

Thanks
David

I have replaced all 4 doors on my 84 300SD recently. The hardest part was re-running the wires and vacuum lines on the new doors. I just rebolted the doors in the same location as on the donor car, based on the paint marks and then fine tuned as I opened and closed the doors.

I use a floor jack with padding to raise and lower the door while adjusting--much easier on the back--especially when doing alone, as I did.

I recently realigned the driver's door on the SDL. It's not a lot of fun because of the weight of the door and the need to lift and hold it in a position while it is opened. If you have a second person to help you, it will be significantly easier.

The door has adjustment in its hinges for height, fore and aft tilt, and tilt toward or away from the body at both the top and bottom. It's a tedious process to get the door exactly where you want it. Additionally, the striker is also adjustable in height and to or from the body. Finally, the striker can be shimmed to move it closer or further away from the door.

The SDL has the for and aft tilt all the way up, as far as it will go, and the door still sags about 1/8". The striker is adjustable for this and the door closes very well. I'll probably need to put new bushings in the lower hinge to get it any higher.

The rear door should be easier because it is smaller.

Thanks guys. Now I guess I'll wait till summer when I'm going to paint the car since the 420SEL I saw in the junkyard is red.

Thanks
David

Come on Want red doors on a black car would look so cool!

Tell me how it went, I have a perfect set of spare doors but they are silver. My front passengers side door has dent that has some pretty sharp edges. It doesn't look like a dent that can be knocked out and I don't want is covered with bondo.

My RR door on my SD has a horizontal "impression dent" going along the whole thing from when I was sideswiped about 1.5 years ago. Its not really so much a dent as just a smooth "impression" with a curve to it, could probably be fairly easily pulled out, thankfully. I just don't have any $$ to have that done.

I think I saw at harbor freight a "door hanger" tool, I dont think it cost to much, might be worth it.

Wow, I have dreams of such a tool for the front doors on the SDL.

What a pleasure that would be.

if you get, it I need to borrow it to rehang the drivers door on my coupe.

3 days after the body shop put it on, it wouldn't close and I had to do a quick rehang so I could go home from work. I got it pretty close but it rubs slightly at the front panel.
