What d'you mean by the "best"?

Super-Mack with 600hp bulldog engine is the best for hauling 60,000 lbs of coal dust through Appalachia. And a 1-lung Perkins makes a superb economical generator to light up cow barns in the foothills..... running all day on 1 gallon of fuel.

Meanwhile it's the 4-spd 240D that most closely matches typical driving habbits with engine power bands, torque curves, hp and general performance.

I guess modern MB diesels are wonderful cars for people who dont like to drive, those who hate automobiles and resent cars that put the driver in touch with the road and the driving experience in general.

IN the US you only have one choice

the 320 CDI for the moment. The b-class will have a diesel option although its release has now been delayed, and the new M class will also have a diesel some time in 2006.

Right now would be either an S400CDI or an E400CDI. However MB did make an SL400CDI for the auto show circut. If they made this car it would rise to the top of my must have list!

Is the B-Class the "Grand Sports Tourer"? I'd be excited about an M-Class diesel had they not made that car incredibly ugly for 2006. I used to dream of a U.S. diesel G-Wagen, too, but guess what ... they made it atrociously unattractive for 2006 (which is criminal, if you ask me)

I think the ML's were incredibly ugly from the start. All they did was to improve its ugliness. I guess you can call it fugly now.

IMO.
The best is the one you own.

Car payments = bad news.
