Arrow my old cv joint, holy cow...

No wonder there was so much clanking, cracking, snapping, and kachungs every time I put the car in gear... This joint went 268k miles, so probably doesn't owe me much. In its defense, it never did fail completely and leave me stranded...

Geez! You got your money's worth from those discs.. Looks like something my sister-in-law would do to her brakes, oblivious to the racket up front, and proud of the fact she got 100k miles from a set of pads....

Probably wasn't far from leaving you stranded though.

looks familiar.

my 81 280 e i chaned the rear to a 3.08. the parts store was supposed to send a correct speedo along but sent one that was for a 3.45 i believe. so the car was going about 85 when the speedo read 70. so i sent my college age son off in it and forgot to tell him about the speedo error. so i forget where he was going but it was a fairly far trip. after about three hours he calls me and says dad, is the speedo right in the car? i am passing everybody like there standing still and it only says i m going 75. so he was going about 90. so i told him. so when he gets home he says dad there is a little vibration in the back of the car could you check it out? so i go out and start up the car and put it in reverse to back out the drive way.. i go about 2' and hear all these awful grinding and crunching noises. so i shut off the car and set the park brake and go back and grab the half shaft and give a yank... sure enough it goes up and down about 2" . i just don't know how he made it home without blowing that cv joint all to hell!

His cv boots looked to be in excellent shape for 268k!! Mine are at 222k and they have cracks allll over them....once again, the salt plague.

Unbelievable. You were driving that vehicle that way?? My opinion of you just went down the tubes, BB.

I toss my rotors when they wear down about .050 on one side!!

When I first took a look at that photo, I actually thought I was looking at a turbine disc.

This was the first garage I worked in so it must have been 1968 or 69. One summer sunday got a service call from the 4 lane hiway, a young couple in a 62 Pontiac convertible had a flat tire. No wonder. The left rear shoe was worn right down thru the cords until it blew. No spare. No dough. All the other tires bald as a baby's butt.As I was changing the tire I noticed the brake drum was worn completely in half. In other words there was a flat plate going around on the axle and a ring holding the shoes on just sitting there. Asked if the brakes pulled, he said they had been acting a little funny for about 2 months.

Fixed them up with a second hand tire and suggested they drive home, slowly, on the old road (they were about 70 miles from home). Don't know what happened but I expect they ignored my advice the way people usually do and went on cruising down the hiway at 70 MPH with no brakes and bald tires.
