rebuilt the vacuum pump today,

my day started with my high milage badge arriving in the mail and then later the rebuild kit. i took the pump off the old engine and rebuilt it. well the nut on the piston came loose and when i tested it,the nut went through the front cover. so i took the pump apart again and put a new nut on it and tightened it tighter this time. well i got it all back together and this time it worked fine. well i was thinking about it when i was installing it and i thought to myself maybe it was just the check valve on the old pump (had vacuum intermidiatly) that was causing problems. well i decided i would take apart the old pump and as i hold it in my hand ..... the check valve's parts fall out in my hand. . but in any case i now have a good pump along with power brakes and a smooth shift just thought i would share my day. now if i can just find the time to wash it.

Sounds like a good day's job. I started mine off with oil & filter change then adjusted the valves on my ole VW bus. Every 1,500 miles . . .

Well, my story is from a few days ago.

Figured I'd put in the left side upper control arm in the SDL. It was an easy job on the right side, so, the left side can't be too difficult, right?

Well, the left side has the UCA attachment bolt down below all the a/c lines, between the two firewalls. So, this is going to get ugly.

But, I manage to disconnect a few things and get a wrench down there to hold the bolt and loosen the nut. Then, actually got my hand down there to maneuver the bolt out of the body. Everything going well.

Got the new arm in, ball joint all tightened up, stabilizer bar all secured and reached down and got the bolt started with my fingertips and maneuvered it into place. Nut installed. Wrench onto the bolt head and the nut tightened.

Job complete in about one hour.

Then I decide to remove the last vestiges of the brake pad warning cable. I have previously removed the sensors and the cable was just hanging there. So, I pull the grommet and take out the cable. Everything fine. Cable disconnects right next to the fuse box. Job almost done.

Then I need to simply reinstall the grommet. Now, I'm just about done and I'm in too much of a hurry. DANGER. The grommet goes right through the hole into no man's land at the bottom of the cavity, with the leaves, between the firewalls.

No problem. I've had my hand down there before. So, I quickly shove my arm down there and before I can get anywhere near the grommet, I hear a "crack".

I have broken the plastic nipple off the check valve for the brake booster. No more vacuum shutoff. Big vacuum leak.

From the dealer, the check valve comes with the Tecalan lines that go all the way to the pump and all the way to the booster. $40.00.

Anytime Jimmy.

Just wait until I do my rear subframe and trailing arm bushings next weekend.
Hopefully you will hear from me when I'm finished.

Yeah.......lol.......I tried the JB weld approach. Actually dried very well overnight. Drilled out the opening the next day.

Then it broke off again.

it never ends!!

two weeks ago the radiator blew up,that same day the vacuum pump quit, lastnight the upper radiator hose blew up(it looked good) and just when i think im done for a while one of the muffler mounts break. not that its a hard job or a costly part its just, one thing after another breaks. the front end is in need of a rebulid, the brakes need to be done, and i think i have a sticking caliper.

God I hope not. After I finish this round of repairs on the SDL, which are simply due to deferred maintenance and repair by the PO, the damn thing better go for a YEAR without any attention.
