Om 612?? Wtf?

I'm not sure if this has ever come up, but check this ebay item:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33615&item=7968813266&rd=1

OM612 5 cylinder DIRECT INJECTION diesel, and FOUR valves per cylinder (DOHC)......wow This seems like a good motor, have I been under a rock and never heard of this motor before?? It says they used it in a Dodge??? wft? :wtf: Is this like the 3.5 rod-bender even though its a IDI??? I feel kinda dumb asking this, but I want to know.

BTW, bone doc, if you read this I saw your 123 with those sweetie new wheels! They look great on her!!!

This should be one of the recent or in production engines- they put the dodge name on the mercedes sprinters in this country.

honestly I've got no idea. I didn't even know it was called a 612.

I've never seen any of these come through our shop.

sprinter

this i would surmise is a five cylinder version of the 320tdi engine used in the current benz e class. i also assume that it is a hell of an engine. i have ho idea if it is compatable with any sedans, but it seems possible.
the dodge sprinters are the same as the freightliner which is a mb van same as what is sold in europe and probably elsewhere as well. i think the freightliners have been available here for four or five years. fed ex is running a slew of them, so if you could find someone in maintenance there you might get info from them.
i also saw on ebay what looked like a 603 turbo crate motor. not much info on it, so i would be hesitant to buy unless it was very cheap... not knowing what it was for.
