Can you spin tires in your diesel?
 

I was having fun yesterday in my 1985 300SD. Put the car in L and mashed the accelerator pedal as I was making a left turn, the rear end broke loose, and I fish-tailed around the corner. The pavement was wet. I have heard my car chrip when shifting. Are these symptoms of a fine running diesel, i.e., if your diesel can't chirp tires or lose traction, are you under-fueled?

When it is wet it is very easy to fishtail around... the only time my tires chirped when (up)shifting though was when my transmission shifted unnecessarily hard due to vacuum leaks and such...and even then it would only be on near full acceleration during turns.

With my old tires (Futura Plus Touring SE) I could completely spin out the right rear tire from a sitting stop on wet pavement if I mashed the pedal :D (yes they did still have tread) It'd keep making noise and such until I let off the accelerator. Not good tires! :eek: My new goodyear assurance tires are darn well close to impossible to break loose, its like they're glued to the road.

A 220D will do a burnout if you cover the ground with greasy BB's LOL.

Well, I can tell you that the 300SDL is not going to be spinning any tires any time soon. :D

But, I can tell you that I took it 50 miles through heavy rain yesterday on the local expressways. The typical roads that accumulate patches of standing water in spots and all the *********s drive 45 mph in all three lanes.

Well, once the traffic thinned a bit, I took it up to 65 mph to see how it would do. It's got almost brand new Michelin Hydroedge tires on it and the feeling is one of a bulldozer going down the road. Never once did it feel like it might want to slide and it hit some pretty good patches of water along the way.

Passed every single $hitbox on the road. :cool:

From a dead stop no, but I can slide the tail around without much of a problem. My tires are also a bit sticker then stock.


My friends E300D without a chip will spin both tires from a dead stop in the dry. :D

Nah, these are symptoms of very low traction... :D

in the 87 300D, it will break loose from a stop on dry pavement when turning. Have since replaced the rear tires- dunno if it still will or not.

yes on gravel, loose dirt and occasionally on slimy wet pavement.

90 350sdl, 83 240/300d, 82 300cd, 82 240d.

now the 03 dodge cummins will spin them on dry pavement by accident and with my 9000 # trailer attached. oh yea i also spun them on wet pavement while pulling a hill with my trailer attached in 5th gear (of 6)

Last night I was making a U-turn and it was pouring rain. Midway into the turn I floored it, and my tail flipped out, I countersteered and let the pedal go a bit, and off I went back on my way. Happens easily in the rain even w/ Goodyear Regatta 2 tires. On dry pavement, I can make the tires chirp when shifting 1-2 only in turns. Used to be able to do that all the time w/ old, dry tired (Metros). :rolleyes:

standard operating procedure:
1) Light turns green
2)Floor it
3) Wait
4)Take a sip of coffee
5)Let off when nearing required speed.
6)Enjoy the ride.

Tire spin very nicely with snow on the street. Otherwise, NO.

I can spin, fishtail, and 180 all I want... When it's snowing. :D

I did do a 180 by accident after a hard rain when I floored it in a tight turn.
