'65 190D dipstick "breather" question
There is a small device that my dipstick sticks into that looks somewhat like a filter. I discussed it with my friend/independent and he said that it is a breather. What do I need to do to get rid of it? It seems like I am getting alot of oil out of this breather. I will be checking to insure that the vent tube from the valve cover to the intake is clear this weekend.

Finally was able to scan a pic of the breather from the catalog that is in the pack with the owners manual and original invoice ($2600).
In talking with my local independent friend he said some of them came with it and some of them didn't. The only reason I can think they would have something like this on there is to reduce the emissions to the intake. I know it makes a mess underneath it and I suspect contributes to this cars oil consumption.

I assume you're not talking about the air intake at all? Because it is an oil bath filter and is suppose to have standing oil there.
Thanks David

ok - finally got off my butt and went out to the shop to take a pic of the actual breather. The white "cap" part turns 1/4 turn and comes off after which time you can remove the filter looking part. This one is soaked and I'm not certain how to keep a new one from looking like this in fairly short order. The part number on it is 000 018 0363.

Answer:
Two options:
#1. Replace tube and stick with one that does not have the breather. #2. Remove tube, silver solder breather slot, clean, paint, reinstall. Both options work.
