1985 300 SD Engine keeps runnig

Need help, anybody has a picture of the back of the ignition switch where the vacuum line hooks? Today I turn the ignition switch off on the 300 SD 85 and the engine keeps running now I have to open the hood and use the manual shut off lever to stop the engine
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I recenelty had this issue with my 300D. It turns out that the cutoff solenoid was the cause of the engine not turning off. It could also be a vacuum leak causing this issue, you may want to invest in a MityVac, if you already have not and test for leaks. Just a bit of info, hope it helps.

hoses

there are only two hoses, if they are reversed the engine will not turn off. one of the rubber hoses and the metal nipple should have blue paint. those two go togeather. if no paint try switching them and see if it turs off.
if you replaced the steeing lock assy some do not come with the plastic cam inside to acuate the valve to turn off the engine, you have to use the old one.

mbenzgoodyear: I have a Mityvac (don't laugh, brand new siting for over 1 month on my tool box) the only problem I don't know how to use it (I will read the instructions booklet) can you tell me where is located the cutoff solenoid, yes my problem started today the car used to turn off normaly but today when I came home I turn the ignition switch of and ....the engine keep running so I had to use the stop lever at the engine.

carson356:No I haven't replaced the steering lock it used to work ok until today the only fix this car had yesterday I finished replacing the K1 kit and I don't recall disconecting any hoses at the transmission.
Looks like mbenzgoodyear had the same issue before.

the cutoff solenoid is located just behind the stop lever (looking towards the firewall. It is round and has star like screws (not exactly sure what they are called). I had mine replaced by the MB dealer so am unsure exactly how to remove and install a new one. I will post a pic a bit later (at work right now). Another thing to check to see if it is the cutoff solenoid is to watch the stop lever when you turn the key off. If it doesnt go down completely, but half, that would be a good indication that the cutoff solenoid is the problem.

The shutoff diaphragm is located on the injection pump behind and below the white (probably yellow by now) vacuum control valve that regulates the transmission vacuum. You will see this white valve near the back of the injection pump. Look for a single hard Tecalan line that extends behind and slightly below this valve. That's the line to the shutoff.

When you find it, remove the hose from the shutoff and connect the Mityvac to the shutoff. Start the engine and try to shut it down with the Mityvac. If you can do this, then the shutoff diaphragm is fine and the problem is either at the ignition switch, or you have a vacuum leak to, or from, the ignition switch.

If you cannot find the shutoff diaphragm tomorrow, repost and I'll go take a photo of it for you.

The shutoff vacuum valve is at the back of the injection pump, up against the oil filter, down below the pump. You can't see it but you can feel around down there. There should be a small pipe made of blue and brown plastic connected to it. This is the vacuum that shuts off the fuel.

Trace this pipe back to where it joins other pipes, and follow them all looking for leaks, cracked hoses, or hoses fallen off. When mine wouldn't shut down it turned out to be a connecting hose 2 inches long which had a crack in it, located at the far left front of the under hood area.

I also had a blockage in the main pipe where the small pipe connects up.

If there are no loose pipes or cracked hoses or blockages try the mityvac on the shutoff valve. If it won't kill the engine you need to replace the valve.

Just removed the vacuum hose and apply vacuum with the mityvac as you pointed and the engine shuts off, so tomorrow I will look for leaks
Thank you.

Looks like the problem will be a leak or the ignition switch the shut off valve kills the engine with the vacuum from the mityvac, now it's dark so I will look for leaks tomorrow.
Thank you

Finally the problem is fixed, the clamp on the cigar hose rubbing against the vacuum line made a small hole on it, just patched the vacuum line wth a rubber hose.
Thanks for the help to all the Members
