Spare Fuel
I bought one of those Mercedes accessory spare fuel cans awhile back and I finally got around to putting it in the spare tire compartment in my wagon. I filled it with diesel and I shook the can to make sure it does not leak. However when I leave the car for awhile I can now smell diesel fumes in the interior. What would you guys recommend I replace the diesel fuel with that won't stink up the interior. They don't seem to sell biodiesel around here and I am afraid any WVO would turn racid if it sat in the fuel can for a prolonged period.

Filter some used transmission oil and use that.

Spare Fuel = anything in the tank after the Reserve light comes on...
It is hard enough to keep the smell inside the tank, don't mess with a container in the trunk. It only takes a few drops to leave an odor, and if it opens, it will rust-proof your trunk forever. I recommend a working fuel gauge and reserve light. Best Regards, Jim |

The shelf life is not great on bio-diesel. If you must carry a spare can, I would use regular diesel and put it in a garbage bag and tie it extemely tight to contain any leaks or fumes.
I would not even consider this with a gasser though. It does get hot in trunks.

Sure does. Also, you can just do it by miles...I just reset my trip odo whenever I get a full tank of fuel. My gauge is odd, it works sporatically, but I don't trust it.

You know now that I think about it why would you even want to carry spare fuel inside a car? The light should come on before you run out, or better yet just don't run it much below a 1/4 tank. I never need more then 17-19 gallons to fill my 23.5 gallon tank. It doesn't pay to run it lower.
