"newbie" question How to crack injector?
 

How does one "crack open" the line to the injector to see if it is causing nailing on an 87 300D? I assume you do this with the engine running.

Follow the fuel rail from the injection pump to the injector. You will see a nut that attaches the fuel rail to the injector (should be 17mm). Loosen the nut (be careful not to put too much pressure on it). When the nut is loose the pressure going to that injector is all but stopped and is not air tight. Now the nut is craked open.

If you are having a prblem that you think may be an injector you may want to do a deisel purge on it to see if that cleans up the fuel system.

With the engine running take your wrecnh and twist the fitting to loosen the line at the injector. Only takes a little and the fuel will stop flowing to the injector.
Don't worry about the pressure, that line is under tremendous pressure but the amount of fuel being fed through is tiny. It will not blast all over the place.
I usually loosen the suspect and retighten before starting. That way if it is stuck you do not have to fight it with engine running and shaking all over. You can fight it in peace and quiet. Easier to hear your own fowl words that way. :D

Injectors not cause of nailing
 

I cracked each injector individually. No single injector stopped the nailing. That indicates the injectors are not the cause of the nailing.
What do I do now.

You can do that by overtightening it as well. :D

With a 5lbs. sledge hammer in your strong arm, locate each injector, via injector tube, aim, and give it a good wack! That'll crack'em good! :D

Otherwise use a 14mm open-end, you'll want to have a cotton rag handy to soak up the diesel around the FI. :D If they are not giving you info, continues to nail, do a diesel purge! I'll bet the nailing go's away! Mine did!

Idiot newb asks: what is nailing?

Moron's answer is: Nailing is an acute affliction of poor "pop" pressure, dirty, or mal-aligned pintal, or carboned up nozzle, or both.

Nailing is identified by hearing 4, 5, and possibly 6 carpenters pounding 10 penny nails into an oak plank, in harmony!

CURE: Diesel purge, or injector rebuild, or add Redline, or Power Services to diesel. Also, B-20 or B-100, and that will cure anything ailing your diesel...BB

What do I do know?
 

I cracked all the injectors one at a time and there was no significant change in the nailing. I put diesel purge in the large fuel filter and it ran better for a few minutes and then went back to nailing.

What do I do now?

I would get a couple of cans of Diesel Purge and run them through the engine, using the procedures that have been described in this forum before. I predict that will fix your problem. :rolleyes:

My 87 300D used to nail and the only thing that helped quiet them was adding either Redline, or Power Services, cetane boost to the fuel at every fill up. It helped quiet them down but not until I had all six injectors rebuilt did it really help with nailing. It also had more power and was smoothers too!

There is a member here who rebuilds Bosch injectors. You might want to consider him for rebuild as he does a perfect job with adjusting spray pattern and pop pressure.
