240D won't start. Definately electrical!

Upon starting my 240 D everything was normal; ei idiot lights buzzer etc. When I turned the key to engage the starter, all went quiet.

WHAT i HAVE:
Headlights
windows
radio
buzzing glow plug relay (goes quiet and all else when key is turned to start)

DON'T HAVE:
glow plug warming light
starter

This may be an incomplete list but it is all I know of now as the car wasn't delivered till late last night.

I hope it's something simple but it will probably expensive.

If you are saying that when you try to start everything else goes dead then you have a low battery or a bad connection at battery.

Unhappy Agree:

It sounds like classic corroded terminals or low battery.
This may also be caused by a charging problem.

battery terminals are clean

and no signs of corrosion. Everything was fine and working as they should, then this happened 'out of the blue'. No warning signs. Battery tests to 12.5 volts. Amperage Has not been tesed. Battery is at least 3.5 years old.

Thanks Guys,
thebern

Also your glow plug relay should not be buzzing. Verify that its not your seat belt warning buzzer youre hearing.

Check your grounds.

Check your grounds, both battery to chassis and chassis to engine. Something that bit me in the past. I found that the bracket, on the engine, that the ground strap attached to was loose. One of the symptoms I noticed was an occasional fluctuating of guages also.

I've had batteries test ok but not deliver under load.

I've had two cars with the identical issues that you've mentioned. Not too expensive. One was a battery and the other a corroded wire....

I had the same symptoms and so I tried a starter button on the connections under the hood. The car started fine that way. The problem was the ignition switch.

I'm thinking it's the ignition switch...

I've started other (non-MB) cars in the distant past by arcing a screwdriver across a couple of connections that are physically at the starter. Many years since I've had to do that.

Would have to do some research to see if the same thing holds true with MB's, but I think it would.

Let us know if you determine the cause of the problem.

It was the battery

Thanks to you all. The battery was bad. Long story, poor typing skills limits my response.
