240D Tranny problem

Hi I have an 83 240D, It has 132,000 miles on it. I drive it everyday and have done so for the past two year. I got it from an old couple in Long Island a little over two years ago and they were the original owners. In the past few months I have been having a problem with the down shifting. The cars shifts fine but let’s say after coming off of the highway going 70 MPH and I stop at a light. Then the light turns green. I floor the petal and nothing but engine rev. Then a large knock then the tranny kicks in. Then it works fine. Goes on all gears and then when I stop again, same problem. It seems to only have the problem after it shift to the top gear. When going 45 mph or less shifts fine, after 55-60 then comes to a stop, problem. Any help would be great. Thanks,
Rob

Thumbs up Similar Problem

This may, or may not, help you. But, my tranny did the same thing. Here is what I did, and now everything is fine. Drained fluid from trans and from torque conv, replaced filter, added 1 can of Trans-X. Imediate relief. I drove it for 2 weeks then did the drain and replaced filter again. It could also be a vacuum issue. Sorry I could not be of more help.......

Thanks for posting that Tom... I PM'd him yesterday when he started this thread saying the same thing... It does not work all the time... but sure is a good bet for many symptoms which can be caused by clogged orifices in the shifting body... and it is cheap compared to most other methods.... the last few times I have posted suggesting it I got some resistance.... I have had some dramatic and instant cures with it as far back as 1975....at worst it will help clean out the system and that varnish will be evacuated with the fluid change.

I should have posted that I did the filter and gasket. I also drained the torque. I did put a quart of Trans X and it does shift better. But when I still had the 4th gear problem I had to post. Hoping the someone would know a fix. I also think its the shifting body. The car shifts fine, its just when I come off of the highway or anytime I hit 4th gear, and come to a stop. The tranny doesn't engage until i rev the engine and then I get a knock and I have full power in all gears. If I drive to a slow stop and shift to S it will down shift normal or it will rev at that point and engage at that point so when I stop I have power. That has been what I've been doing. Thanks for all your help. Any more info would be great. Oh and yes the fluid is fine and as far as a Vac problem. I have great vac. and I changed the Vac. mod, last year also I bypassed the EGR so the tranny shift great, just that one problem.
