OM606 Turbo clanking from timing chain galley
I was running a few cans of diesel purge through the old girl today, and while waiting around, I decided to take the oil cap off to see what kind of blowby I had.. while there was minimal blowby, I heard an audible "clanking" noise which appeared to be coming from the chain galley. I don't recall hearing this on a 617 or 603 with the oil cap off and the car running. You cannot here the noise with the oil cap on. I made a quick video..
http://207.44.234.41/e300/MVI_1938.AVI Ideas? Should I start looking at timing chain stretch? Or am I being paranoid? |

Timing chains on 606's last a very, very long time. I have personaly seen a car with 317k and the original chain. The owner said it was stretching at 1 degree every 100k miles and he never planned on changing it becuase he doesn't think he will keep it past 500k miles.
But the car had used Mobil 1 from about 70k miles and he had a Frantz filter on it.

No ideas? Can anyone with a 606 take thier oil cap off with it running and tell me you have a similar noise?

Hi
Took the cap off the 606 and had a slight metallic noise but nothing like yours, mine has 199K. Cheers, McCool300TD

Thank you. I was set out to measure the chain stretch today until I realized I would have to take off all the metal and cloth/rubber injector lines in order to pull the valve cover off. This meant I would have to take off the intake manifold yet again. With no dial indiactor on hand to accurately do it, I skipped it for today.

Certainly check the chain stretch but perhaps it is the chain guide tensioner going bad? Or a defective chain guide itself? Just would check everything out in there as a general precaution. Any chance you are hearing the vaccum pump making more noise than normal? Too nice a car not to accuratly locate it.

I just checked my wifes car (98 E300D - 74K), it sounds pretty much the same as yours. It's amazing that when you re-install the oil cap the tapping totally vanishes. I could not detect ANY blowby in your video, this is pretty amazing given your cars mileage. I also checked my OM602 engine and it did not make any noise at all. |

I remeber the first time I came across that noise on a 606, sure as hell got me worried. MB's standpoint on it was that it was normal noise, albeit, yours sounds a bit louder than that one. A friend of mine has a n/a 606, I'll listen to that one and see if it does the same.

for me anyways, something like that always happens before a long drive or when you really need the car!
