Size of nut on rear of trans. output shaft?
Can someone help me determine the size of the big nut holding the 3-pronged flange on the rear of a 717.411 5-speed transmission? I need to buy a deep-well socket to fit this nut. It looks like it's about 1-1/8" 12-point, but I cant determine the exact size, because I can't get a wrench on the nut right now.
I realize that it's actually a metric size, but I have had good luck with SAE wrenches on metric nuts when they get into the 1" and above size range. Plus, SAE deep well sockets are much easier to find locally. Thanks for any guidance. SteveM. |

These ARE metric trannies and using SAE on any metric nut (or the other way around) is just asking for a stripped head. Anyway, the nut on a 722 4-speed is a 30mm 12-point. I could not find one anywhere so I brokedown a bought a Hazet 900TZ 30mm off the internet. |

1 3/16" is 1.187" The nut is not going to care that there is an additional .003 clearance between itself and the socket. ;) If you are able to find a six point, there is even more safety margin. |
are you sure?? the last trans rear seal I did (on a 420SEL), I used a 27mm deep socket... edit: oh duh, I just reread and saw its not an automatic, forgive me my brainfart |
