Glow Plug Gurus.......The Aftermath
 

Replaced 4 of the 6 glow plugs. For the first time the glo plug light on the dash came on for 2 seconds. The car wanted to start and caught on. Ambient temperature was 60 degrees. I was elated and went to do my errands. This morning and the temp is about 50 degrees no glow plugs seemed to be working. I checked the glow plug relay and the fusible link is melted. I dont show any of the wires to be grounded to the glow plugs. What next? Could it be a bad fusible link and where do you buy them?

So far, so good. FYI, the time for the light varies by temperature, but the plugs stay energized for about 45 seconds, even if the light goes out in 2-10 seconds. If you wait for 15-20 seconds, regardless what the light shows, you will get a consistent light-off.
The fuse link is available at your dealer, or from Fastlane, a sponsor of this site. Go ahead and get 2 or 3, they are about $1 each.

You will want to check the GPs again, especially those two not replaced. They should read 0.6 to 0.8 ohms or so. Replace any that read less, and if you read 0.0 suspect a short in the wire or the GP itself.

At 0.6 ohms they draw 20 amperes cold, so all six draw 6x20 = 120A total! Their resistance increases as they heat, so the current drops to about 10-15A each, or 60-90A total. The fuse strip is rated to melt at 80-90A, a bit above the normal current draw when hot.
