240D engine??? ANYONE
1 Attachment(s)
I am looking for a good 240d engine. I have an opertunity to buy a 83 240d, the engine runs, but, smoke/diesel pours out the exhaust. It's pretty much gone. To expensive to rebuild, I think. What do you think? He only wants $400 for the car. Paint is not perfect, but not peeling, probably just a buff. No rust though. It is a 4-speed too. What would I be getting into? Thanks!

If you can turn your own wrenches I would say go for it and plan on rebuilding the engine as long as their is no hole in the block/oil pan:eek:. Don't mess with it if you have to pay someone to do the work unless it is a car you really$ want.

I do work on my own stuff :D !! I was thinking about rebuilding. I have taken out my 300d engine and replaced mains and rods, but never took the whole thing apart. If I was to rebuild it, the cylinders would probably have to be replaced. I have never done this much to a diesel engine. Any idea what cost would be for parts??

I did one a few years ago and if I remember the parts came to around $800. I don't remember if that included the $150 I had to give for a good used head. I had a machine shop replace the cylinder liners. I think that was around $40/hole. Do a search on here and you will find my postings on it somewhere. I ended up selling the car to my sister for my neice to drive and she is to this day.
Went back and found the link. 240D work |
I would be looking for a 300 turbo to bolt in. That would be a great car with a 300 and a 4 speed.

wowser - that was five years ago:eek:.

Well, if I do this myself, I was looking at worse case senario, baring needing new pistons, and valves. Here is the list, parts are comming from Germanstar.net Would this be most of it?
Cylinder sleeves=$38.00 X4 Rings/standard= $179.00 Std/Mains = $56.00 Std/Rods = $31.00 Timing chain = $109.00 Head gask kit = $53.00 Lower gask kit = $67.00 Total w/out shiping= $648.00 |

I bought a very nice one with 76k on Ebay. $500. It went in my truck a few months ago and is perfect. I'd look around there and see what turns up.
I just got a complete car with 125k given to me a couple weeks ago that I'll pull apart and keep the motor for a spare. Sometimes you just step into it! http://seriestrek.com/images/car.jpg |

MercedesRover.....Is that a Series III you put that diesel in? I have cotemplated putting a 5cylturbo in my Discovery. I think that would be TOO much work, but not sure. How hard was it to put that 4cyl in your Series? Where are you located? I am also on Landroversonly.com forum. Have you been there before?
|
Yup. It's a '74 NAS 88" that I rebuilt a few years back. Getting the engine in is a bit of a chore but worth the work in the end. Being an owner of a Disco I'm sure you're no stranger to the electrical nightmare that's a Land Rover. I had a '91 Rangie too that I spent more time under than in. It's a wonder there isn't grease fittings on the hood hinges!
But to have a Land Rover with every inch my own wiring, and an engine that will run with NO electrical supply if necessary, is a pleasure. It's a very trustworthy beast now thanks to this great little engine. I don't think the 3.0L, even with a turbo would be enough power to keep you happy in a Disco though...They're pretty heavy and have the aerodynamics of a building. All the same, I'm starting to make a kit to install these engines in Land Rovers that will include the adapter plate, pilot bushing and a modified oil filter housing and oil pan. They will work with the Series transmission as well as an LT77 in your truck. And yes, I spend a little time on that board but not too much. Most of the time you can find me at the Guns and Rovers board...They're a good bunch of guys much like the people here. Anyway, if you're interested, here's a link to a site about my truck and some of my travels. SeriesTrek (Sorry we took this thread off subject!) Jim |
MercedesRover, That is awesome :D, yeah I would like to get a 109 and put in a 5cyl non-turbo, perhaps turbo :D. I have seen pictures of someone doing this. I will contact you some time!
:hanged: (yeah, ditto for off-subject) |
