Well I really did it this time. While replacing glowplugs in my 300d turbo I snapped the tip off the #2 cyl glow plug . Apparently it was so carboned up, while trying to work it out of the hole I broke the whole tip off. The tip is still in the hole, I can see it through the injector port. Any and all help would surely be appreciated.

Ehh I been there before, not with a glow plug though. Well there are two things you might be able to do.

First, try to use a small flat screwdriver and a small hammer, and try to "tap" it out.

Second, if its hollow on the inside (enough room to fit a flat screwdriver in there slugly), you can insert the screwdriver and twist it out counterclockwise.

I hope this helps you some. Depending on how bad it is, you might want to get professional help, you might cause more damage by improperly trying to remove it. Goodluck

SORKOR,

I grimaced when I read the title of your post. Is this an early or late diesel, pin type or loop type?

I expect that if you will remove injectors and spider tubes, if you have not already, you can get enough room to use an ease out. Make sure you cover the pump so you don't get anything in the pump.

Good luck,

broken glow plug

Thanks for the reply Larry, The plugs are the pin type and I already removed the fuel rails to facilitate(ha!) the glowplug removal. I also ran this on the tech help forum and Benzmac was kind enough to give his .02 . He said there is a tool to remove the ???injector seat ??? to get at the pre-chamber. Gonna go to the dealer in the AM to check this out, price and all. If any readers know what this tool is I'd appreciate the info.

SORKOR,
There is a tool called a "pre-chamber puller". I am looking at a catalog called Performance Products 800.243.1220. The specific one I am looking at is for a later model 300D and list the price at $124.00.
I personally would try the Parts Shop on this website. Anything we can do, such as buying parts from Mercedesshop.com, does put money in their pockets, but hey...after all they do have the best FREE site for MBZ ANYWHERE.
Seriously, go to the parts shop and send them an e-mail, they will get back to you shortly. Bottom line is you are going to have to spend the money for the tool, but at least spend it where the folks actually care about your MBZ abd you....MERCEDESSHOP.COM

Good luck!

broken glow plug

CJ thanks for the reply. I still have a knot in my stomach over this caper. The wife's been pretty good about it ("well I'm sure you didn't mean to do it") though. Can you describe the tool if there is a picture in the catalogue.I did as you suggested and put a request in at the parts shop.I am picturing a deep socket to fit over the injector with tangs on the end to fit in those slots on the seat.

BROKEN GLOW PLUG

Bill, thanks for the reply. I am assuming we are still talking about doing this with the head still bolted on, correct?

BROKEN GLOW PLUG

Well here is the final installment of "AS THE GLOW PLUG BURNS". I got the piece out. First I took out the injector and heat shield for the # 2 cylinder. Next I used some carbon buster to clean up the piece and bring it to it's original diameter. Then I brought the piston to TDC, (NOW COMES THE GOOD PART)with a screw-in adapter I made for the glow plug port I used a constant stream of compressed air and a thin piece of wire to poke at the broken tip. After about 90 seconds it came flying out like an ICBM out of a Wyoming silo. Did a Super Bowl touchdown dance on the lawn, installed a new plug, changed the oil, and had a beer. OK a few beers. Thank you Johnson,Larry,CJ,and Bill for your replies and advice. GO GIANTS!!!!
Kevin
