the superior Diesel

I keep forgetting that Japan is on another planet. No wonder China doesn't want Japan on the security council.

There is a reason GM uses Izuzu engines in their diesel trucks. Though I have read mixed opionions of them online. I looked under the hood and it is an Izuzu engine with a Bosch IP. Not a bad combination.

DieselJim,

There are 2 reasons GM is buying the Izuzu engines for their PU trucks:

1. GM doesn't know how to build a good Diesel engine.

2. They can buy the Izuzu engine for less than they could build an engine themselves if they knew how.

#1 may well be true, but then again you could say the same about Ford and Dodge as well since they buy their engines from a third-party vendor. Probably say #2 about both Ford and Dodge as well.

At any rate, the only issue on the Duramax motors has been injector failures. Since that is a Bosch system, it doesn't really say anything about Isuzu.

I dunno. The Dmax is an Isuzu design, built in a plant owned and operated by both GM and Isuzu here in the US so it is in fact a domestic diesel. When Toyotas, MBs, BMWs, etc are built here are they still imported? Most Dodge trucks are built in Canada. And compared to the money pit, troublesome, difficult to work on, breakage prone, gonna get its butt sold MB that has been sitting in my garage for the past 2 months cause I'm too pissed to work on it... My old GM diesel has given me 215+K trouble free miles. Less prone to teutonic temper tantrums and far easier and cheaper to work on. IMHO. RT

If GM indeed knows how to build one, then the question does become, 'why won't they.....why haven't they?'

I've always wondered why they sabotaged the market with the pieces of junk in the 80's.

I did have an Isuzu diesel once and it was a phenomenal little engine. Started at a genuine 20 below once, outside, after it sat all night.

diesel don

RW,
We need to sell our two cars as a package deal, split the $, and hope things work out better on the next one!
I've already spent a couple of thousand that I will never get back, but that someone else won't have to spend.
It is truly making me crazy.

Japs make good diesels

I love this forum and my experience here has led me to investigate other diesels as well. In the far east Isuzu dominates many diesel platforms in trucks and boats. Toyota makes most excellent diesels as well. Hino is a very respected truck diesel maker . All the major Japanese automakers fabricate diesels (including Honda). They have much greater experience in this department overall than American automakers. It is a shame we have not beeen offered this durable powerplants here in the states.

japanese diesels

I owned an 83 Toyota pickup diesel and at the same time (nearly) an 84 Toyota car diesel. Both trouble free.

GM makes great diesel engines look at the us military and it's stock of them. And how about GM's EMD division they build locomotives and stationary powerplants all over the world. Next time you drive past a rail yard and see 1 dinky locomotive pulling 30 cars it's probably an EMD built in the early 70's

US Diesels

That's true, the US does make excellent large displacement diesels. There are many companies that make these big diesels for trucks and industrial capacity. They are very durable. US large truck diesels can easily go a million miles without overhaul. Unfortunately, these engines did not make it to common market until Cummins made it into the Dodge. The Japanese have been making smaller displacement diesels for many years. When John Deere began making smaller tractors, they outsourced the engines to Yamnar(a premier Japanese diesel builder repected worldwide). In fact, I believe Deere eventually bought this division of Yamnar and their smaller tractors continue to be built with these engines made in Japan. I must add in this deparment Kabota is likewise a very sought after name for their diesels. I lament that we have not had the selection of diesels the rest of the world has enjoyed(for the most part). The diesel option has just not been there, nor did the American public want it. The Japanese make very fine diesels that are the equal or better for the rest of the world to behold.

why not gm?

in my opinion, gm chose not to make good diesels for the same reason they always use... money. they wanted to put something on the market that would run on diesel fuel for really cheap. they just made it way too cheaply. too bad because it probably wouldnt have cost that much more to do it right.
