Seems like VW belongs on that list somewhere...
The watercooled VW's manual tranny VW"s were great cars and parts are ungodly cheap.

Aircooled are rugged, easy to repair, etc. etc. but 200k is about rebuild time (yet as any good aircooled VW owner knows...that isn't that hard ...just don't forget to adjust your valves )

300sd 81-85....but then I do own an 83sd, so I'm not impartial. My argument for entrance to "automobile heaven" would center on the fabulous straight-five turbo, along with the super-fabulous 126 s-class chassis.

1971 Ford Galaxie 500 (Burt Reynolds special). As long as you don't have to make a turn you'll be OK!

First the White Hearse that brings you in. Then a 1962 Ferrari GTO with Phil Hill as shotgun and a chase car with a mechanic, parts, tools and a cooler of beer when the car inevitably craps out! The route - North California in the 60's.
