Angry 240D shifter mess

My 240D is a four speed. While trying to replace the my gearshift knob I rotated the gearshift mechanism , and something came loose, I could pull out the shift rod and now the shifter doesn't engage properly. How do I get it back together ?? The Mercedes CD and Haynes are silent on this I think. I'm in trouble my wife is going to shoot me !!

Thanks Leathermang. But is a trick when reinstalling the shift lever into the #11 shift tube ? I wonder what gear I should put it in or do I need put a screwdriver through the sholder of the shift tube to push the #3 spring retainer on the shift lever past it ?

Update : I put it back together and all the forward gears work OK but I have to push the shift tube by hand over to reverse. It looks like maybe the tip of my shift lever broke off ? Most pictures show a sphere or small cylinder at the tip of the shift lever where it fits into the "guide bolt" . My shift lever goes to a blunt point and thus I can't get leverage when I push the shifter over to reverse. Am I right ? I guess I'll see if Phil can get a shift lever assy.

Yes, there's supposed to be a ball with both sides machined flat on the end of the hand-shift rod. I've gone through a number of these shifters and have ordered parts from the MB dealer (at dealer cost), so they're still out there, but most of the shifter assy parts come from Germany (still only takes a few weeks for parts though!)
