Well, the other day I went to my local Pepboys to get another batch of Redline diesel fuel catalyst and low and behold the store was closed. I went to the next closest store and when I went to get the stuff it was nowhere to be found. The people at the store informed me that they were no longer carrying it. Where to now? Any ideas other than ordering from MBshop or over the internet?

Why not MBShop

Why are you not willing to support the website that you and us all obtain much info from? If you order in quantity the shipping is minimized, plus you don't have to run all over town wasting your fuel.

DFC vs 85 Plus...

First of all, I do agree, we should support Parts Shop by buying from them. However, if this is not expedient enough for you, or for what ever other reason you may have to "get it now". Go to redline's website, http://www.redlineoil.com" for a list of dealers in your area.

Also, if you can't get Diesel Fuel Catalyst, you can use 85 Plus. In a converstaion with one of their chemists, I was told that the two products are actually identical. The only reason that they are sold with different lables on the bottle is out of an interest in maintaining the old customer base that has used DFC for years.

My car has had a 1/2 bottle added to the fuel every time it has been refueled for the past 10 years.

Although I am interested in checking out Lubro Moly...

More data, Mr. Bill...

I need more information. Why is it better than the LM products, and does your shop sell LM's "Touring HighTech Diesel Special Oil"? If so, is it a superior quality product in your opinion? The two products you mention have "special" applications, as opposed to DFC's "general" application. Diesel Hi-Test may compare somewhat, but the Diesel Purge is a specific application for "sick" diesel engines.

I thank you for your response, bow to your superior knowledge, and consider you an authority on these matters.

BTW, did you work out the problem with your sister's car?

Thanks for the additional info...

Well, Bill, it sounds like Lubro Moly might be something I gotta try. The local MB dealer recommends the RedLine 85 Plus. I would be interested in getting opinions from other members who have tried both brands.

And thanks to moraine for the info on DFC and LM. 1/10th bottle? I'm using 1/2 bottle of 85+ per tank of fuel! I thought that was the dosage, but I have never even picked up a bottle of DFC. Hey, I wonder, are you talkin' about the gallon bottle?

As for the Lubro Moly Diesel Oil, no, it's not the Voll Synthese, or the MOS2 Antifriction. It is actually called "Touring High Tech Diesel Special Oil". The details can be found on it, and the full line of their products by going to http://www.liqui-moly.de. You see, the Lubro Moly brand is known in Germany as Liqui Moly. And don't worry about language, the website gives you the option of seeing it in English.

You should be able to get Performance Products there in Houston to start carrying it. Jerry Boyd, Lubro Moly's National Sales Manager told me that they are one of his biggest distributors. And, hey, what about Parts Shop? You guys should beat everyone to the punch, and carry more Lubro Moly products. I'm sure Jerry would love to hear from you...

As for my comments on you being an authority, I was referring to the use of the LM products, not diesels in general. But, then again, you ARE the moderator of the diesel forum, aren't you?

Weeeeeellll, I'll Be Damned!

moraine-

There actually is no specific dosage indicated on the bottle of 85 Plus! It just says: "Treats 25 gallons for cleanup dose" and "Treats 100 gallons for antiwear, and to improve cleanliness and efficiency".

Assuming that the second (previous) owner of my car was correct, they have been using 1/2 bottle per fill-up. This engine must be super clean inside...

The only other indication is " ...will improve the cetane rating by 3-9 cetane numbers (12 oz/25 gal) and 1-4 CN (12 oz/100 gal)..."

Even the local MB dealer suggests using 1/2 bottle per tankful...

Redline DOES cut down on the smoke

I've been using the DFC since I had my 300D and it wasn't until I ran out of it that I noticed the difference in the smoke out the tailpipe. Since I haven't been able to get ahold of DFC I was apprehensive about trying some brand unfamiliar to me. Today while warming up my car, I looked out the front door at it and I noticed quite an increase in smoke.

Re: Redline DOES cut down on the smoke

Ok I got my Red Line Catalyst at Pep Boys, should I put the whole bottle in my 300D with 150,000 miles? The instructions on the bottle are not clear? As far as I know nothing has ever been added to the fuel. It does smoke a little..

Smokin

GA-W123 Diesel,
If I was you, I would use a full bottle of Redline in each of your first two tank fulls. After that I would use about half of a bottle every other tank for a while to see if that helps your smoking. Then you might cut back to half a bottle every 3 or 4 tanks. It kind of depends on your driving. Also, a good synthetic oil like Mobil Delvac 1 should help reduce smoking also.

Oil Change Interval?

This is a question that almost everyone has an opinion on. :-) The easy answer is, the Manufacturer's service interval, which for my 240D I think is 3000 miles...but I think some 240Ds had a 5000 mile service length. If you use dino oil, do what is recommended. But, my opinion, is with synthetics you can go longer between changes, but others won't agree with that. Others might say to double interval time, but change the filter once in between, ie, filter at 3000 miles, oil+filter at 6000 miles. It also depends on how much you drive. If you only drive a few miles at a time and not frequently, you need to change more often (mileage-wise). Anyway, the one true axiom is, You can't change too often. ;-)

when to use it

From what I remember, the bottle states that you should use a full bottle for the "clean up dose". After the first bottle, you should just use one hash marks worth for each fill up. I think you will notice a drastic reduction in smoke and also noise. Good luck.

Full Benefit...

The only other thing I can add, is that in order to reap the full benefit of this forum, it's advisable to read the entire thread you're posting on, and to not be afraid to do a search in the archives for the information you need.

Remember kids, the only really stupid question is the one you didn't ask...
