Rebuilding my old 1979,300 SD

Well after 500.000 miles and proper engine services, Chain replacments, oil changes, rebuilding injectors, 5 times in 500,000 not to bad, But i,m real partial to my old 300 SD Runs great, I,m and old Diesel Hound anyway, Cut my teeth a long time ago on Detroit Diesels, Cummins, Cat, Internationals, and all the want to be Diesels that came along to GM, and all the other auto makers . MERCEDES
was the first, to make a real Diesel engine in a car. and they have built one of there best, the 300 SD has all my praise, I enjoy building Engines of all kinds , And have built many in my day, Retired Coca Cola Mechanic, Coke USA, Atlanta.
So I have all my new pistons, rings, valve guides, seals gaskets, new oil pump, rods & Mains, everything I need to build from the botton up, plan on having it in my engine stand this Memorial week end. Plan on documenting total rebuild with my trusty digital camera, from the beginning to to end, I also plan on tweeking a few areas in the head and turbo. Any MB Engine Techs that have any skills to pass along Please let me know, Jerry From RI.......http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/newthread.php?do=newthread&f=15

To bad you don't live in atlanta anymore. I would love to bring the digital rebel and digital handycam and make a dvd video out of that.

Hey Pop: Welcome to the board. I look forward to your project. I always promise (myself at least) that I am going to photo/document major projects but then I get started and before you know it, hours have passed without photos. You need a camera crew. Good luck with the rebuild.

What are you planning to do on the head?

Don.

Are you going to Vat your block ?
Are you going to take out the spheres at the end of the main oil gallery and clean it before Vatting ?
Are you going to install new sleeves ?
