On the rear end of the 84 300 sd the speedometer gear needs to be shimmed so nothing binds. There is apparantly a special tool you need to buy in order to judge the correct shim. Does anyone have a used one they want to rent/sell or know where i could get one. Also any pictures of this tool would be helpful because like most mercedes tool i could easily replicate it.

All W126 chassis have electronic speedo, only thing that sends info to speedo is a INDUCTIVE pick-up. No shims for speedo gear.

If you have to replace the rear cover due to Breakage or if the cover is a different style, then the installed height of the rear bearing must be checked & adjusted. This requires a depth gauge & measuring straight edge. In this case you use shims to set the bearing height. Not really a diyer.

I'm sorry that i didnt recognize that as being an answer to my question. Is that all i have to worry about then is the height of the bearing. Also where would I look for the torque settings in this instance non of the manuals i have seem to show any of them. Thanks again for your patience.

The 8mm(13mm wrench) bolts that secure the cover are torqued to 10-12 ftlbs! The rear nut should always be replaced & torqued to 75-85 ftlbs.

Thank you very much. I understood the part about the small bolts i just wanted the Large nut rating. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

When i took the old nut off the rear of the transmision i noticed that it had a dent in the sides. Is this damage or was it dented to prevent it from coming off? If I am supposed to lock the nut in by denting it then where am i supposed to dent it and how?
