Theres no reason to pretend these cars are better than they really are.

they *ARE* stinky, loud, vibrating machines that have rust spots, prime showing through the paint because theyve been waxed a bazillion times, cracked dashes, leaky trunks, pitted this, squeaky that and lots of corners broken off of 30 year old plastic.

i havent yet replaced my grandmother with a newer model... i see no reason to replace my shlomo with a newer car. likewise, just because something isnt fitting with current style trends(the 123/126 chassis cars are back in vogue at the moment, squint at a 300c or new caddy and youll see what i mean) doesnt mean it is worthless.

the world is full of consumers, a few producers have studied all facets of science and have used it to shove what they(consumers) "want" down their customers throats. do you see where this is going?

the mercedes benz(modern models excluded-- who the hell is going to spend the money itll take to keep a w202,w210,w140 or just about any benz after 95 or so) was NOT designed as a consumer product. it was designed as an industrial-grade workhorse that can be repaired on the side of the road when it finally decides it cant deal with the part thats been failing for months. average people CANNOT even maintain their newer benzes, how can they be expected to pay people to repair it every time it needs a repair?

if that was the deal with these cars, they'd all be retired to boca like the 1987 cadillacs that were technologically superior

I must admit that I haven't found a more amicable car to work on than my 240D.

Then again, it is the only car I have ever worked on.

Kind of like automobile monogamy

"I only adjust the valves on one car, and I feel like the happiest man alive."

Glinko,

When you're 27, your friends will have some appreciation for such a car -- its longevity, reliability, efficiency, quality of construction.

When they're 37, they'll wish they had been as practical as you all along.

When they're 47 (and you're maybe still driving that car) they're going to exclaim, "Wish I looked as good at age 50 as that car!"

Give it time.

You are really going to be dissapointed when you start dealing with other cars.... don't get rid of the 240 until you really really appreciate how bulletproof and easy it is to keep going.

I say keep them ignorant. These car are hard enough to find. If everyone and their brother wanted one, we would never be able to find one to buy.

I think some of my friends think my 300TD is unreliable because I work on it all the time, and throw a lot of money at it. The only time I have had a problem in the short 7 months I have owned my MB is at lunch one day when the battery went bad. But that could have happened in any car. Just cause I work on the car all the time doesn't mean it is broken or unreliable, it is just maintainance, restoration, and because it is fun.

That is soooo true. I had such a hard time with my previous Ford that I swear I'll never drive another one again. It was a '98 Taurus.
I replaced the rear brake pads this weekend. Took all of an hour. With that Ford it took all day the POS that it was.

Homie, when I first started driving, I had a silver 1977 chevy caprice classic. with RED vinyl interior. It was NOT cool, this was in 1990, way before the '70's were cool again.

But I HAD a car, and a V8 nonetheless. That was the important part.

If your dumb "friends" flip you crap, jut be all

The rust will kill it loooong before myself and my friends are 30 years old.

Don't be in a rush to get something else then. MB's are cake, I'd rather work on an S600 then a Sable.

Eheehehe....I'm gonna be getting my hands on a 1987 Cadillac Sedan Deville in a few weeks....fully optioned (complete with the infamous HT4100 V8; renound for blowing valves and a number of other catastrophic things)

But yeah, it's going to be for free, so meh.

In other news: I hit 230k last night!!!
Me too, I don't plan to let much of anything get between me and my SD. Other MB's may come and go, but if I have anything to do with it, my Grandkids will get to see this car (which is a ways away! )

that's why right now I don't carry colision. If I got into a wreck, I wouldn't report it to them anyway 'cause I'm not going to let the insurance company rape me of my car and it's history by totalling it.
