Should be located on the left rear side of the engine, just below the head/block junction and nicely obscured by the oil filter if I recall correctly (haven't looked for one in almost two decades).

So I know now my engine number is 617 912 058 300 but I guess this is not the "type number" I need for ordering oil cooler lines?

From your engine number I can tell that it is an OM617.912 This should give the information you need. It may be handy to have the Vin number as well, in case there are differences between body styles too.
