123 Dash Removal / Vacuum Diagnosis

Looks like I'll have one to do in the next week or so. A friend of mine wants me to pull his dash and replace the vacuum servos for the climate control system.

Is there already a DIY photo page for this? Otherwise I have no problem taking pictures as I go if anyone wants me to.

Please

Post pics and instructions. I have never seen any dash removal photos. I heard it was a bear to do though.

Thanx

Its not too bad, one of the easier ones to do.

Ive done ones in a 123, 203, 210, 220 and 163 so far. I fear the 124 ;)

Dad and I did the 85 123 this winter. It wasn't really to bad. The only hard part was getting the rubber on the center air ducts hooked up again. My arms are too big to get through and around the glove box hole and the instrument cluster hole. I bent a welding rod and smoothed the end then went through the air ducts and teased the rubber back on.

A few days ago I spent the morning testing my ACC vacuum system. The only photos I found were in the factory service manual that somebody was nice enough to put online. As it turns out, the things that leak outnumber the things that hold vacuum. Are you sure that the vacuum element for the center vents is leaking? This is the only one that requires dash removal to replace, although having the dash removed would make things easier. The element for the recirculating air flap is a little difficult to get to, but I was able to do it (I have appropriately-sized hands for someone who is 6'1"). If you do remove the dash, be sure to clean the evaporator while you're in there.

I have to remove the dash and replace all the heating and AC vacuum pods here in the near future. I would love some picture and helpful hints before I tear into mine.

The removal of a 124 dash is no harder than removing a 123 dash. It is everything past the dash that is a pain.

The 123 dash removal is quite easy. The first time was a little tricky, but after you have done it once, going back in is nothing to dread.

I did one on my 230CE and it only took only about 1/2 a day. It does come out easier than it goes back in though. The aformentioned center duct boot was the biggest PITA of the whole process.

Never did get to doing the dash on the guys 123. I found his vacuum leak and fixed it.

I do have the one out on my 126 project right now, I want to make sure all the flaps work before i put it back together. Still have either a dead acc or blower to deal with, but it keeps raining...

Removing the dash in a 1985 300D

I've searched all over for instructions on how to remove the dash in an '85 300D and all I see are posts saying to search for instructions. Can anyone either give me a description or direct me to a page that describes this procedure? One with photos would be extry good. Also, I'm wondering if while I'm in there I can do something about the musting smell coming out of my vents. Thanks in advance for your help.

To remove the dash, you simply open the doors, remove the bolts on the sides (under the vinyl flaps), then remove the speaker grills and remove the bolts you find there. Then you remove the glove box, disconnect the air temp sensor and air vents. Remove the kick panels and remove those screws. And then A-pillar covers. And the cluster, of course.

(Didn't seem like that much when I did it.)

Removing the steering wheel isn't necessary, but it isn't hard and makes the job a lot easier. Just index the connection.

As for the layout underneath, this should help:

I'd lift the photos, but they're too large and look terrible when compressed further. (At least with the software I have here.)

I would think that they are all rather easily accessable except for the center vent actuator. That's still doable if you have small enough hands and long enough arms.

Main Air and Fresh Air Vacuum Elements - Can't find parts

I can not locate part numbers for the Main Air and Fresh Air Vacuum Elements on my 1985 300TD (123). Even the dealer does not show part numbers or if they are the same as the center or leg room vacuum elements. I am about to replace these but need all the elements first. Does anyone know the part #s for all the vacuum elements on this model?

Thanks!
