undercariage

1983 300sd turbo w126 body

i have no rust... but i want to live to 100 and i am 42 so my car needs to last another 60 years... i was thinking about doing some rust prevention..

does anyone have any rust prevention ideas..

perhaps i could sand blast the undercarriage an then put new undercoat on.

or i could just put new undercoat on over the old...

why do you think

Where do you live? Do you live where a lot of salt is used in the winter? I am guessing yes since you are asking this question. If you live here in the south, I would not worry.

I would not recommend sandblasting the undercarriage, as the original paint/undercoating is usually very high quality. Sandblasting the undercarriage would expose bare metal and I do not think that any aftermarket undercoating would offer the protection it needs.

I would just recommend that if you do drive the car in the salt, to keep it washed under there as much as possible. I have heard of some northerns actually "painting on" used oil on the undercarriage.

Buying another car for the winter is the only way to prevent rust for decades.

Just by keeping the car clean you can put off rust for years if not a decade or so.

i agree... dont sandblast... nothing you can put on will match the factory finishes. you can look it over really thoroughly and if you find any cracks, cut back the undercoating til you get to well sealed material, then make repairs to any damaged material, including paint metal and undercoating. if you cant find any cracks in it then just keep it clean and wash it good on a regular basis in the winter when the salt is the worst.
