1979 300SD Hitch

I have searched both this forum, and also google looking for any information about a hitch for this car. I have found that they are available for the D and the TD, but nothing for the SD. Does anyone here have a hitch on thier chassis 116 SD? If so, is it a custom job? If it was custom, how much did it cost? Thank You.

Someone had one for sale in the parts discussion not too long ago. I'll see if I can't dig it up. I think it was boneheaddoctor or mikemover.

Thanks
David

Tabor,

About 15 years ago, I got a trailer hitch from a hitch dealer for my '80 116. So at one time they were available.

Sorry: It was too long ago to remember the dealer's company, but at that time they had one in stock.

Nope, I don't want to sell mine, I still use it.

It wouldn't be very hard to fabricate one. The one I have bolts on to the bottom of the bumper and is also to the rear of the spare tire well with a big washer on the inside.

If you need it, I could send U a drawing and some dimensions.

When searching the internet for a hitch, try using the European term "towbar".

I found a place a couple of year ago in the UK that had a towbar for the W126. I was tempted, but I'm really looking for a class II receiver into which I can attach my bicycle rack without touching the painted body in any way.

How hard to install? Have you had any problems with it?

I downloaded the instruction. It is only a Class I receiver and the manufacturer does not recommend its use with bicycle racks that it itself sells. Looks like it bolts onto the aluminum structure in the bumper and any bouncing down the road with bicycles bearing full weight could easily exceed the 200 pound limit.

I'll keep looking.

If you are interested in that Dalan hitch try searching for a Draw-tite hitch. they make a very similar design,Easy to install and around $90- they suggest 40 minutes or so to install. You would only need to drill 4 holes and bolt it on. I put one of the the draw-tite hitches on my 300D. It was all I could find to fit and couldn't get anyone to build me a custom hitch. It's a permanent mount hitch so things like bike racks and cargo racks won't work with it.

I did have a custom class 2 receiver hitch built for a 300 wagon a few years ago. For $200 it included wiring. If you want something like that look in the phone book for hitch installers or metal fabricators and call to see if someone will custom make it for you. The way it worked on the wagon was the hitch bar was u-bolted to the bumper arms and then further attached on either side of the fuel tank.

We took my dad's 300E in last year and a place installed a hitch. It has the removable hitch so I don't know what that's called. I don't know the brand but it's not custom.

Thanks
David

Hmm... half the reason I wanted I hitch was to put a bike rack on it (the other half being to tow a small trailer when the family is on vacation).

I will concider having a custom one made.

On another note: is their a way to mount a bike rack to the roof of the car without damaging either the paint or the crome? Also, I would like to be able to mount one of those roof cargo carriers (this may do instead of the hitch).

On second thought: you can get a ball mount bike rack, and the 150lb tounge weight should be more that enought for 2 road bikes and the 12lb bike rack. Thanks guys!

Tabor, did you send the emai to mikemover? He has an official MB hitch for a 116. I think you should seriously look into it. He never said anything about it being sold.

Thanks
David

I just did, but I am worried he will want a lot of money for it.
